ATM
I hunt with a guy who uses whistle commands for his dog, and I think over uses them, the problem i am having is my dog will come to me when my hunting partner uses his whistle.I do not use my whistle at all when I hunt with him because i think the dogs were just getting confused. Any suggestions on how to make this work, and tactful suggestions to tell him he does not have to use his whistle every 5 minutes would be appreciated. Just had to vent, kind of a frustrating experience.
fisherdog19
If you both hunt together a lot and for most of the day, you could take the dogs out seperately. I have the same problem, except it's verbal instead, with one of my hunting buddies and we started hunting our dogs separately in one hour shifts. This will give your dogs a little break and keep them fresher throughout the day. Just an idea.Fisherdog
Bushwacker
Does anybody have any tips or sources for using whistle commands. I have never even hunted with anybody that uses them, but just getting a pup and would like to research it a little.
Shorelunch
I use 1 short whistle for stay/stop & look at me for further instructions. 2 short whistles for "go" in the direction I point and multiple whistles for come. I wouldn't teach whitle commands until your pup is sure of the verbal commands first.
greenman
number of whistles is a personal thing. My dog comes on two and stops on one. if your friend is constantly having to whistle his dog it is probably because it runs to large and busts birds. he needs to teach the dog to hunt closer. my 2c worth. Surface Tension
I run 2 dogs myself. Don't use whistles when their hunting together. I call their name then give the command. As far as your buddy ask him to give up the whistle or give him a cracker.
Guest
What kind of dogs does your buddy have ? I have springers and use whistle commands to turn them while quartering, depending on how fast the dog covers ground it may be whistled at quite often, there are several different types of whistles out there, the kind I use is high pitched and not very loud. tomahawk
Use different sounding whistles. The first thing I do is remove the pea from any new whistle I get. My hunting partners all use whistles and there is never any confusion amongst the dogs. When I blow my whistle I blow it in a way that my dog knows its me.Theres no question and the more you hunt the more your dog will know the difference between your whistle and someone elses whistle.
