Sumac Tea

Recommended Posts

I put the strainer that comes with that enamel pot in it first, then the Sumac. I'll just lift it up and out, then run it thru one of my wire mesh strainers. Lotsa little spidey webs in there...  Thank you for the idea, post and pics, eyeguy, I can't wait to try a glass! Hope it cures what ails me.

I wish I still could. My body treats alcohol in it like a bee sting...Doc said I might not make it to the ER next time. The itchy legs with every shot or beer should have tipped me off. Boy, do I miss having a drink.

Ya, right. You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant. They're everywhere. I can see clearly what I WOULD like right now. I just won't say it.

good that you know! the tea is great straight but if you make it strong a little sweetener is dandy.

I'm not sure if I have them in enough water...but I can always just add more, right? Go for that dark golden color?

Like I said, too bad he lives in MN.

Here is California regulation

Physician Responsibilities

The physician caring for the qualified patient must fulfill the following criteria and responsibilities:

  • Possess a license to practice medicine or osteopathy in California issued by the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California.  This license must be in good standing.
  • Take responsibility for an aspect of the medical care, treatment, diagnosis, counseling, or referral of the applicant (patient).
  • Perform a medical examination of the applicant (patient).
  • As a result of the medical examination, document in the patient’s medical record that the patient has a serious medical condition and that the medical use of marijuana is appropriate.
  • Have the patient sign an authorized medical release of information.  The county program cannot process the patient’s application without the appropriate authorization for release of medical information.
  • Provide to the patient copies of the medical records stating that he or she has been diagnosed with a serious medical condition and that the medical use of marijuana is appropriate. You may use the Written Documentation of Patient’s Medical Records (PDF)1newwind.gif form to serve this purpose (a copy must be kept in the patient’s medical record).

And from another page...

Prop. 215 lists “cancer, anorexia, AIDS, chronic pain, spasticity, glaucoma, arthritis, migraine, or any other illness for which marijuana provides relief. Physicians have recommended marijuana for hundreds of indications, including such common complaints as insomnia, PMS, post-traumatic stress, depression, and substance abuse.

And none of this goofy special labs providing extracts stuff.

Will you please stop your psychobabble and diagnosing of what in your opinion is a medical condition of mine that in your opinion could be helped by marijuana? This is a friggin' thread about Sumac Tea, not about an alleged medical condition you perceive me to need certain care for. Stick to the friggin' proper thread, and let the people that have valid medical training and are certified in it, LIKE ME, make those decisions about THEIR lives for themselves. Go yap about it on another thread.  By the way, my cousin, who lives in Pismo Beach, California, and is licensed in medical care, can provide me with any info on that subject I desire.  Let's get back to the SUMAC TEA thread, please. Thank you!

No desire meant to offend anyone with this post, other than the noted subject. My apologies to anyone else. Sometimes there are things you HAVE to do.

Lol,  the cooking forum is getting squirrely. Del didnt drive off road too far. Natives used to smoke the stuff......well the leaves anyway. Supposed to be excellent in a blend......apparently mellowed out the tobacky. Don't think it was whacky. Someone should try though.......lol.

Sorry, it was intended as a joke, you know smoke instead of drink.  Then someone mentioned mn medical mj, which is a joke of a program so I posted about California which is much more liberal.  None of the stuff about conditions etc was intended to apply to you.

Again I apologize for posting off topic something that could have been construed as aimed at you.  That was not my intent.

I always thought sumac was a poisonous plant?  Might have to do a little research.

There are several kinds of sumac, one of which is "poison sumac" which acts sort of like poison ivy and poison oak.

I think the one that folks make tea out of is staghorn sumac

Well, I assembled all my filters and strainers this am after a 20 hour soak, tea was a very dark brownish/gold. Triple filtered it 3 times, last time using a gold mesh coffee filter. Poured a glass of it.......sip.....another sip....uh....basically no flavor.Tasted at best like some mildy musty water. Tried it over ice...the same  Did some extensive reading/research half the day  in my naturecookbooks, on line, my plant books, and  appears to have been a few things that caused it: 1. Too dried out, too late in season. 2. Found out a lot of rain will wash out flavor, we've had some monsoons last 3-4 weeks. Was definitely  the proper sumac, Staghorn. Have 3 big tea jugs and one decanter full of it now......$#@! Dang it! Oh well,at least I have something in my whiskey decanter again.

interesting. really dark you would think the flavor would be there.  I picked when they were reddish.  A good test might be when you find some to pick. rubs one of the buds in your hands good and then lick your palm. if it tastes like a sweet tart have at it.  no taste, no pick. :)  here is a pic of the color I like.
