Does anyone know why we are having such a bumper crop of the floating algae this year?

This Filamentous Algae is going like gangbusters around the Brainerd Area.  I've seen where if you have too many nutrients like phosphorus it helps it grow but wow.

Kinda like the song "Rain makes corn, Corn makes whisky"   Well, "Rain washes Nutrients, Nutrients feed Algae....."    Something like that.    One can imagine with all the rain we have had, there is a steady flow of phosphorus from the yards and water shed's.

Just my guess.

add in a couple of weeks of really warm weather to the mix..

Most lakes have too much phosphorus. Filamentous algae is self-propagating problem though. Too much of it limits weed growth, and a lack of weed growth makes more nutrients available for the algae.

Thanks Nick....yeah this blasted stuff just keeps getting worse and worse.  And with the wind blowing in on my dock that didn't help.

It seems like every time it does rain its measured in inches, not tenths too. That certainly doesn't help.

I wonder how the fish can even find their food. They sure aren't finding my lures!

The worse thing I am finding isn't the floating stuff (which as you see is pretty terrible) but the algae is overtaking the normal weeds in the lake and sitting on them and keeping them from growing.....yuck.
