1 RESORT I WILL NOT USE AGAIN!

I have launched here before. Never again!!! Sounds like Garrison sports or the Red Door would be the best choices.

“Yeah and 95 percent of them are spear houses,” Terry Thurmer, of Terry’s Boat Harbor said. “But I don’t let them out of here.”

Thurmer is not very happy about the DNR decision to allow spearing of northern pike on Mille Lacs. “I think it is the absolute worst thing the DNR could have done. If you look at the south end of the lake, they are all spear houses. Most of them people are going out of public access. That’s not bringing any business to resorts.”

Thurmer’s neighbor up the road a spell disagrees with Thurmer. Kari Hough of Garrison Sports said his business is way up from last year at this time. His rental spear houses have all been full, or nearly full, for the last three weeks. He is selling a lot of merchandise to the sportsmen and women – everything from spears and harnesses to bait. “I don’t have anything to complain about,” Hough said.

I have too add this and this is my stance! we all spear and love it and we all know why.... but some people think we are nothing but BIG pike killers. All I say to that is learn from us, I saw, thought and improved my tip up fishing so I get bigger pike hook and line over spearing... Bait and location are a big part, I have tip-ups rigged with planner board releases to hold 12"+ live suckers for starters. off my soap box

A few years ago Terry was in a newspaper saying that he believes all public accesses on Mille Lacs should be closed. His reasoning was that the resorts do not make any money off of people that use public accesses.

So I guess I am not surprised that he said this, but I am surprised he is still in business after making comments like these.

Its his right to have an opinion. Just like its our right not to fish out of there.

Support those who support us. $$money$$ talks.

I agree people have there right to there opinion. But it is this opinion that stopped spearing in 82-83 when the dnr starting stocking muskies in mille lacs. All the spearers were going to spear them all illegally is what the opinion's were.

I didn't hear the guys at the bait store complain when I purchased the dozen suckers or the folks at Bayview complain when we purchased dinner and beer after we got off the lake. They all seemed happy to see us. I also wonder, if the south bays are filled with spearers this year, were they empty last year? It seems like having people using the resource is better than an empty lake.

I called him early in the season to ask if I could access from his resort, he blatantly asked what I was going to be doing and when I said spearing he said he wasn't allowing access to spearers.

Yeah I read that remark before I went out, that's why I said what I did so they knew the two guys that disrupted everyone's fishing, drove like race car drivers and left their open holes unmarked didn't represent the entire spearing community and that most of them are decent guys. They seem like very nice people from the little bit I talked to Cindy today

Kind of ironic that Terrys has rented a summer time slip to one of the founders of the Minnesota Darkhouse and Angling Association every summer for years ... but has the "ethical" stance of your money is not good enough for me when a darkhouse spearer tries to give him money in the winter time.

No different than most arguments against darkhouse spearers I guess...

There are some people out there that will never get it...

Lead the horse to water then move on if they refuse common sense.

In the end the haters gonna hate no matter what you do...

I went out of lybacks earlier this year too and also told him not all spearers are like some of the ones that have came there. I think its a lot of people who haven't speared before and got caught up in the craze and told him I always push my block in and mark it.Ironically my brother didn't mark his hole because he was coming back to it the next day (we slept on the ice angling) well he never went back to his hole so my uncle went over to it to push the block back in the hole and stepped in the hole because snow blew over it thankfully nothing bad happened except for a wet leg and to listen to my 50 year old uncle lay into my 40 year old brother was priceless

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
