Beer brewing

Recommended Posts

I had the same experiences as Mrklean. I bought everything needed and made a half dozen batches and my success rate wasn't the best.

A neighbor does a lot of wine and I helped him and watched the process this year. I'm planning on learning more this year and getting some grapes going in the yard.

Another thing I want to get into is making liqueurs. I made a couple batches of Rhubarb Liqueur last summer. It was really easy and it was fantastic mixed with a little tonic on a hot summer evening.

the easiest and best in my opinion is taking Vodka and infusing it with something, usually add some sugar also. All the wine I've had isn't to my liking, beer is interesting but usually a crud shoot. Still all fun hobbies especially in the Winter.

That's exactly what I did. I used good vodka and 6 tablespoons of sugar and some Grand Marnier. It turned out pretty good and no compliants from any of the testers. grin

I did a couple liqueurs this winter as described. Used fresh pineapple in one, fresh blueberries in the other. The pineapple one was...okay. It's got a nice pineapple taste but then it gets really overpowered by the vodka (I used Svedka which is a pretty mild vodka for the most part). The blueberry one, though...oh, boy! If I was a better alcoholic I'd put that right on my pancakes. It's almost TOO good and it masks 100% of the vodka. I'm thinking about a blackberry and raspberry next. The recipe I had called for them to sit 6 weeks, and I can tell you the taste from 2 weeks to 6 weeks was unquestionably better. In other words, let it sit the whole six weeks. As the fruit breaks down, etc., it gets better and better.

Raspberry Vodka:

1/2 cup sugar and about a cup of raspberries. Let sit for a month and tip it around every few days to mix. Taste occasionally but don't taste too much because in a month there may be nothing left. Use a medium priced vodka. Don't buy the expensive stuff or the Karkov.
