Day time Crappie Tips

There is so many options in finding crappies during the day. It is dependent on the lake you are fishing. I have been on a good crappie bite during the day in mid depth ranges 14-19 feet. The lake I am on has much deeper water but I am fishing the flats near deep water. I am chasing gills but when I see marks 5 feet off the bottom I grab the rod I have rigged up with a Maki Plastic Mino and bingo I have crappies to give to my grandma. Other lakes it is over the deep basin areas and for this I like fatboy jigs or tungsten jigs for these fish as you need to get up and down. Also these fish will hit spoons sometimes.

As Ozzie stated stained or murky water can be key for a day bite. However with that said I have been fishing a clear watered lake during the day. You can use jigging spoons and chubby darters for search lures. I normally do not use minnows during the day.

if your fishing the basin and marking suspended fish that are reluctant to eat. pin point the depth they are moving through at and find an adjacent flat at that depth and you should have active fish there. also consider ice thickness when deciding where to fish. as the winter progresses and the ice gets thicker the oxygen levels will fall and the fish will school up in deeper water.
