Reusing plastic?

Sorry if this is elementary or basic, but we are having a disagreement. When using a flavored or salted plastic, is that bait reusable a second, later trip? Or does the flavor/salt dissolve away after the first outing? Of course this is based on the fact that the plastic is still in good shape after the first time (fishing sucked that day). Thanks for the help.

Deeky-

The majority of plastisol products(plastic worms except MisterTwister Exude and Berkley Gulp)are made of the same material as PVC pipes. The same used in plumbing. However more liquifier is placed into the product to get the soft feel that you know as a plastic worm. Some copanies use a oil based scent into their worms to be used as scent as well as a release for thier molds. And others add solt to give the lure more weight...

Now, with this in mind, any oil based scent or salt is usually cast off within your first dozen casts or so, after that most all the salt is disolved from the outside of the bait and most of the oil based scent is washed off. And with no way for the PVC material to let the water get to any of the plastic beyond the outside shell of the bait the rest of the scent/salt is trapped in the bait.

So with all this stupid information I have given you, unless you change your bait every 12 casts, the bait is not going to get any worse. So to answer you question, YES you can still use a bait that you used before and it will be fine!

Now as for the 2 other plastic lures I mentioned Berkley Gulp and MisterTwister Exude... Berkely gulp is 100% biodegradeable, not exactly sure what its made of but its not plastisol. Once it hits air, you use it, you will not use it again another day, but its scent lasts much longer than 12 casts...
MisterTwister Exude is 90% biodegradeable with a 10% resign plastisol not like PVC. Its there just to hold the other 90% togeather. Its active ingredient is water. Once the bait gets wet it gives off scent untill the bait is gone.. Wich is probably like 10,000 casts. If you dry the lure off, the chemical reaction stops and you can re-use it another day. If you leave it sit in a cup of water for a few weeks it becomes sludge!

Hope this helps...

Great info on the plastics. The difference between the Exude and Gulp! is something that I've been wondering about.

You probably could re-use the Gulp! product if you set it aside and let it dry out a little. But you've got to monitor it. Just be sure you don't stick it back in the package with the rest of the Gulp! products. You'll end up with a big glob of mush.

Just a general observation. As far as Gulp goes I'm not sure about reusing it, but to me it seems to be nothing but another gimmic. For the most part fish are stupid animals that go by instinct and have no real capacity for thought. That's not to say that appealing to a fish's sense of taste won't help you. But this line about GULP! giving off more scent and taste doesn't matter to me. The baits still look horrible, are difficult to handle, and overpriced. Just think back, every year berkley comes out with the next big thing that will revolutionize the fishing world! What about squirmers? Those things sucked. Or those rattle baits that were half soft-plastic half hard-bait, absolutley horrible. Berkley Bubble up??? I've seen the results of every major national bass tournament in the last 2 years and it didn't play a role in any of the top 10 patterns. Don't get me wrong I have a lot of Berkley soft-plastics in my boat and in my basement, it's just that some of the stuff they put out can be all marketing hype with no special fish-catching ability behind it.

deek. i use mostly chompers plastics for bass. yes they do loose some of the garlic and salt scent, but after they have hung on a rod rack for a week you can still smell it.( and for Gods' sake, don't leave them in a car with the windows rolled up !!!) we use them til they are torn off or to wrecked . but to answer your quest. yes you can reuse plastics, but you do give up some of the flavor. you can always use a spray on or dip scent for your plastics. del

WOW, so much more detail and information than I was expecting. Thanks so much for all the info! Definitely solves the disagreement. Thanks again!

I have been using Gulp this year and have had good results. I have been putting it back in the package when I am done for the day and reused it with no problem. I have never had them turn to mush. The hole the hook goes in and out when you take it off gets a little sloppy though. If you forget them on your jig over night you have to cut them off with a (sharp) knife as they get super hard. I like them. I like the bio-degradable part the best.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
