18" LM Bass a common catch?

Granny

Recommended Posts

My cousin (Frogs) and I were out fishing this weekend and we started talking about the size of the fish we were catching this year. Frogs caught a 18" and 19" largemouth. We get pretty jacked up when one of us gets a fish this size. This year almost every time we go out we end up catching a bass at or over 18". Do most of you guys consistantly catch fish this size? We were just wondering if we are finally catching up or if were just having a good year.

Thanks in advance.

The 18 inch class fish isn't that uncommon. Don't get me wrong though, they aren't jumping in my boat lately.
Now getting fish 19+ inches consistently is getting to be a feat. IMO

Sounds to me like you are having one heck of a year overall. Enjoy, and keep it going.

Before bass really became my number one target, an 18"+ fish was something that I NEVER caught. Since I began really fishing bass a lot it's a fish that still no doubt gets the blood flowing like nothing else, but a more reachable goal. Also depends a lot on where your fishing. At times I've gone a month without getting one over 18" , but then again I've caught multiple within hours. Regardless, it's a hog!

And I agree with BLB, the inch between 18 and 19 seems small, but in the numbers of each you catch it's a BIG difference.

Granny,

Congrats on your bass. 18" and 19" bass are nice fish. A lot depends on the lake you fish and how hard it gets hit by other bassers. Some heavily hit lakes, an 18" is very hard to come by due to everything thrown at them every day of the week. Regardless, an 18" and 19" bass are worth talking about.

As mentioned above, the lake has almost everything to do with the size expectations. My wife and I went out last Thursday night on the lake we live on and I caught 19.5", 20.75", and 21.25" and she caught a 19" in about an hour and a half of fishing. This is almost a common occurance on this lake. I went out with my buddy this Sunday on a lake about 10 minutes from my house for about 6 hours of fishing and caught about 15 bass with the largest going about 13". If I caught a 20" lm on that lake I would have been very happy with it.

It start's with 18". You get a few of those, then you pop a 20". Then you catch some smaller ones, but want to get back up there. Then, BAM -- you get another 20 or maybe even 21". From then on, your hooked. You'll want to keep going for the big ones. It's alot of fun catching numbers of "footballs", but you keep going for a true "horse". Have fun, and enjoy the ride.

I agree 18 inchers are much more common, In one summer I catch many 18 inchers, but I catch probably a 1/3 of 19 inches in a summer. 20 inchers are less yet in fact I could not break the 20 inch mark last year. But caught a 20 incher the other day. If you strictly target big fish you will up your odds, good lakes and proper presentations. I am going to do more of this this year. You will get bit less. AJ

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
