I have a 2007 minnkota PDV2. This passed weekend while using it, I started smelling what I would considered hot/burning wires. Would one suspect this is the known problem of the motherboard burning out or could this be the motor? It turns right at left but I have no thrust (prop does not turn). No line around prop.

Here's the catch, I was just about to order Ipilot (smoking good deal) for this unit. Anyone know if by replacing the head with ipilot, would that help? Is the motherboard located in the head that's being replaced? I'm also guessing it wasn't the motor cause I could smell it and the motor is located down by the prop underwater right?

2 years ago my PDV2, I think its a 2006, had a similar problem. Motor clinic replaced a fuseable link in the head. It had melted some plastic but they told me I was lucky it hadn't damaged the motherboard, which would have been expensive. I don't remember how much it cost to have it repaired other than it was surprisingly cheap.

Tracing the wires should be easy enough, but take a couple of pictures of the position of everything before you start moving wires around. The heads are packed tight and it can be difficult to get everything back in place when reassembling. It might be easier to take it to a repair shop and get a diagnosis and possible repair of the problem.

I have a 2007 Pd2 trolling motor. I have been having issues since day one with it. I recently got it fixed again by Motor Clinic and they found the lower unit was getting water in it from the sonar transducer. They had to replace the sonar transducer, shaft, and seals. Works great now

Yes you could do that, but there is some reason that the wire got so hot in the first place. If you don't fix that, then the wire will just melt again.

There should be a fuse on your red wire somewhere between the battery and the head that should have blown before the wire insulation started to melt. You need to do some troubleshooting to find the root cause of the problem or have a qualified service tech do it.
