buzzard01
Anyone figured out how to wire there auger for reverse like the new ones.
JSK76
I posted about this a when it came out but no response. I think it's going to take a 4 pole switch of some sort. I have a switch for a winch that allows forward and reverse but it's huge and is momentarily on only, it's basically what it would take but needs to stay on instead of just momentarily.aanderud on here seems to know a lot about this stuff maybe he can figure it out for us. aanderud
I think a polarity-reversing switch or relay/solenoid would do what you want. Something like this seems simplest: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PNI...VD741M4G58PM9PHOr this:http://www.amazon.com/Position-Polarity-...MCJQNBFJCPC0B09I don't know if the motor on the Ion draws more than 30 amps or not. This one's rated at 30 amps but if it draws more amperage than that, you'll need something beefier. Various manufacturers make all kinds of models up to and including some that weigh almost a pound for winch applications (like 75 amp draw continuous up to 5 minutes) -- so no matter what the draw, I'm sure you can find something appropriate.Maybe just call Ion and ask them what kind of relay/switch they're using. They might even sell you one.
JSK76
I think I've got it figured out, we will need a double throw, double pole switch that is on, on. One side of the switch will be forward and the other side wired in reverse polarity to run in reverse. Now I'm not sure on how many amps the switch needs to be.I see aanderud posted while I was typing this post
aanderud
You can also buy these switches in either "momentary" or "maintained" mode. The "maintained" mode actually stays on like you wanted. I specifically searched for momentary because I thought it would be safer, but it might be a bigger pain.
JollyJoker
I see there is a kit listed (20181) in the manual of my new Ion auger (with reverse) that looks like it is the new grip, switch, wire with connector for the left handlebar. Maybe this would be all that is needed to make a regular Ion to the new style with reverse. If somebody wants to call and let the rest know what you found out and what the price and shipping would be.800-345-6007
dairyman
I e-mailed ion a few weeks ago and asked if it was possible to retrofit an older ion to have a reverse and they said NO----------bummer. I'm sure someone on this site will come up with a conversion though
OutlawBiz
May be a stupid question...but what do you all feel is so beneficial to having reverse option on the Ion!? I am looking to buy my 1st Ion, just wondering if the reverse feature is a MUST or just another "cool" feature?I've owned multiple gas Jiffys, simply slush the holes by pulling the auger out while spinning....is that what the reverse feature of the Ion is supposed to accomplish? JSK76
May be a stupid question...but what do you all feel is so beneficial to having reverse option on the Ion!? I am looking to buy my 1st Ion, just wondering if the reverse feature is a MUST or just another "cool" feature? It's not a must at all, it's more for the guy in a wheel house that can't pull the auger up fast and let the water flush the hole clean. If fishing in portable I don't see it being all that beneficial. That being said I bought the new one with reverse last weekend because I have a wheel house. I'm also selling my "old style" ION that's in great shape. I looked into the wiring a switch and there's a computer box of some sort in there with wires coming out of it, I suppose it controls the 5 second delay when the trigger is pulled. After looking into it I don't see it being possible to retrofit an old style.
JoeMX1825
Cool thread, as an original ION owner, I too was interested in retrofitting the reverse, but the more I thought about it, this just adds something that can go wrong out on the ice, i'm keeping my original ion as-is. Hawg
Mines the old style too, but I do like playing with my Slush Copter.
