For the first time this year, I have squirrels climbing the fence into my garden and eating my ripe tomatos. I have live trapped one so far and relocated it, but that is a hassle and probably less humane than killing them. Where I live I can't use a gun, would a rat trap do the job?

A good pellet gun works and is quiet. "live trap" and a garbage can full of water also works. Small body grip traps can also work with the proper set.

Rat traps might work but be sure to tie them to something heavy.

There is a hunting season on squirrels so shooting them can only be done in season with a license. Live trap them. Just bait traps and you will catch them.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought you could shoot a squirrel any time you want if it is causing property damage.

I have the same situation and they are never in the garden when I am home. I did the following and it seems to work. Mix dish soap, water and hot sauce (sriracha, Tabasco, etc.) into a spray bottle and cover plants and fence.

Squirrels in the county are game, squirrels in the city are just rats with big tails...
