How long give up bear site?

Recommended Posts

When you first set up a new bait station how long does it or how many baiting does it take you to draw a bear in? I've got two spots (5 mi apart) that always get bear past 6 years both been great, usually within cpl days, this year baited twice Friday and Sunday checked today and still nothing. How long until you bail on a spot and try another spot? Any tricks to try, somthing little extra to draw in (bacon honey burns?).

How's acorns/berries etc this year do they have a lot more food than most other years? Bear populations (area 51)???

Thanks

Jay

As long as you have one hitting you may as well give it a little more time. It's only been 5 days if you put in on the 15th. Some do take longer to fire up if there are a lot of other food in the area like berries. Plus the weather has been pretty darn calm with not much wind that I have seen for a while, the scent may not be getting to far out yet?

Thanks, I only have 2 set up neither hitting, I'm going back tomorrow check again and try new scents and a burn if not hit. Using Anise and bacon and liquid smoke any other suggestions on best scents?

I wouldn't give up quite yet, sounds like its been productive in the past. We've had years where its taken two weeks before they start getting hit. If you want to try something maybe throw out another bait elsewhere, but I wouldn't give up on the two you have established. As far as scent we usually just use liquid smoke and that seems to work.

Give it time Jay. I would throw out a 3rd bait before abandoning. Some years the natural foods just rule. Last year it took us almost 3 weeks before we started getting good hits. The blueberry crop last year was huge and late and this year is the same unfortunately. Going to check mine for the first time tonight.

Jay if uve donebur home work wich i know uve done, its produced bears in the past, me i wouldnt give up on it at all. I dont want to tell u to stick with it. But myself if ive done the home work an its happend in past years i would give up on it. I have a site you all know of its my river bottom, its a gimme, but sometimes it takes alot longer than some years. One year i was a week in to hunting before the first hit and i took a real goofld bear off of it. Things are different this year. Early bearrie year for me any way. Get ur grease air born as said. Launch i it into the foileage. With a watter cannon. Soak the the site and hang a grease bag. I wouldnt give up on it. Bear know its there. They wont hit the buffet alot of times untill their fridge is empty. I just started to bait mybriver bottom last night. Had a cam on it and 70 pics showedna bear has been there all week pocking around, even without bait. Just do what u know stay the course and it will happen. Its lime ice fishing, ya never know when that bobber is going down. And mostley its wen ur not looking or mackig a sandwich.lol

Don't give up. If you have had the same bait stations for years, the bears will know that it is there. Eventually their hunger will take over and they will come by and investigate. One trick that we do to get good smells into the air is deep frying bacon. We use a turkey fryer and deep fry about 10 pounds of cheap bacon. We put the bacon on the bait pile and we use small branches with a bunch of leaves on them to dip into the oil and fling as high up in the trees as we can. We have actually seen bears come in and lick leaves where the oil is. Its messy, but very effective.

Sounds like a waste of good bacon!! even ifs its the cheap stuff. grin

We never go to some of the extremes that other go to. We spray liquid smoke around our baits and up in the trees. I copied this from another site. Puts it into perspective. Its not that they aren't in the area, just to much natural food. Give it time..

Is it true that a bear's sense of smell is 7 times greater than that of a bloodhound?

Indeed it is. There is perhaps no other animal with a keener sense of smell. Bears rely on their sense of smell to locate mates, detect and avoid danger in the form of other bears and humans, identify cubs, and FIND FOOD. Although the region of the brain devoted to the sense of smell is average in size, the area of nasal mucous membrane in a bear's head is one hundred times larger than in a human's. This gives a bear a sense of smell that is 7 times greater than a bloodhound's. In addition, they have an organ called a Jacobson's organ, in the roof of the mouth, that further enhances their sense of smell.

Here are some accounts of how truly well a bear can smell:

"A black bear in California was once seen to travel upwind three miles in a straight line to

reach the carcass of a dead deer."

". . . male polar bears march in a straight line, over the tops of pressure ridges of uplifted ice . . .

up to 40 miles to reach a prey animal they have detected."

"A bear has been known to detect a human scent more than fourteen hours after the person passed along the trail."

"A male can detect which way a breeding female is traveling just by sniffing her tracks
