Best Places To Buy A Used Boat??

FISHINGURU

Question

Hey guys, I will be on the market to upgrade my boat in the near future. I know the obvious places to search like greg list and the classifieds. In this thread I'm more looking for stores that sell used boat, especially a place that offers financing.

Any recommendations out there??

Most dealers sell used boats that are brought in on trade, but most deals I have found are from browsing the local ads. You can usually finance at a bank or credit union for a lower rate than a dealer maybe able to offer just need to look around a bit.

If you buy a boat from a private party, you only have to pay taxes on the trailer (saves you a bunch of money compared to buying used from a dealer plus private party is usually more willing to haggle than a dealer. "It's killing me to let this baby go for this, let alone that." "My manager needs to approve that." "I have to feed my children off this boat." etc.) Take your time finding exactly what you want. My credit union financed my boat and it was from a private party. They have no issue as long as your loan is for book value of entire package or less.

I was wondering about that, is there a certain year the boat has to be before the bank or credit union will give you a loan?

I would think anything over 10 or 15 years old would make a standard bank nervous. There are lenders that specialize in boat loans. It's not un heard of to get loans on 20, 30 maybe even 40 year old yachts and go fast boats so it can be done.

Dealers are about the only used boat sellers I know of who offer financing. Credit unions are the best place to get a loan. Right now my credit union is offering 2.5% for used boats, RV's and ATV's up to 10 years old. I would bet that dealers would be offering 6 to 8% or a 1% for the first 6 to 12 months and then sock it to you with 10 to 12% after that. If you have credit problems Credit Unions have programs to help you out.

IMO you would get more value and a lot better price from an individual.
