Boulder Walls

we have quite a bit of boulder retaining walls at our house, we've lived here 12 years. I couldn't imagine where to start with any product with all the gaps that are here there and everywhere. The only vermin that I know inhabit our walls are snakes and even thought the scare the crud out of me when I'm walking up the steps and one is sitting basking in the sun they do no damage. I'm sure mice live in there too but never had a skunk, wood chuck etc take up residence and cause any damage.

If there is something I'd think it would have to be a spray deterent type product you'd spray on the wall every few weeks or whenever it washed off.

smaller boulders, or rocks.

If you don't have fabric of some sorts behind your boulders and are having a lot of problems consider having the wall torn down and built right, with good boulder fabric behind the wall and boulders fit tight together with smaller boulders filling the gaps from behind.

Otherwise boxes of mouse poison, some small critter traps, and heavy duty wasp spray will take care of most pest problems in boulder walls temporarily.

Yep, mice and snakes is what I was hoping to deter.

I've been told that there is some clay product available at local farm & garden stores (but not the name) OR a black landscape type foam. I was thinking the clay product might be difficult (or impossible) to get in all the nooks and crannys..... but that maybe the black spray foam could work.

Just looking for any input / experience

If you filled in the cracks, are there other places they would still hide?

I am sure there are. Under a shed, ect. Still trying to look at options of shoring some things up around the house. I did remove quite a bit of vegetation, stuff I didn't like anyway. Previous owner had a ton of overgrown plants up against the house and I have enough yardwork to do without hedging bushes all the time.

Back to the boulder walls.... I did talk to a Landscaper who suggested Handi-foam black polyurthane foam sealant or Aquascape Waterfall foam. Don't know... you'd think there'd be something.

Pour concrete through a tube or squeeze bag?

Just saying I find snake in my grass and in my landscaping rock, even where I don't have any plants....may help some....but I am thinking probably wont rid you of them.

Every time I mow I see snakes and skinks, and I don't have much space at all in my retaining walls. I think they are more in the grass around them though.

Thanks for the input guys.

I know I will not be able to eliminate them. We moved to the country and that's just part of the local wildlife.

I do believe there are some things that can be done to make the area less attractive to pests. In my case, elminating some of the overgrown vegetation I think will help. Too many hiding spots right up against the foundation.

Probably will leave the boulder walls alone then.

Might have to get a couple of outdoor cats to patrol the area though grin
