How many of you guys have had luck with oats ? I'm going to try them in a few weeks an mix some peas in too . We have about 5 acres of rape an turnips to plant in about 2 weeks . We spread 7 ton of lime the other day on 3 acres of it .

I have tried rye for the last 4 years and they eat it but not a big draw , so I hope the oats do better .

They will smash your oats, and peas. Depending on where you are planting you many want to hold off even a little longer unless you plan to bale it as well. They will eat it any time but like the new growth best. We'll be putting ours in the week of Aug 11th.

good question...not sure. When we planted them the deer kept them mowed pretty well, the main thing is you don't want the oats to seed out as the deer like the younger stuff. The turkeys will hit them if they seed though.

Why oats if I can ask?

I have done winter rye plantings and mowed it with great reseeding success.

I also did a side by side test with oats, buck forage oats, winter rye and winter wheat one year.

Winter rye was overwhelmingly mowed down compared to the other 3.

Oats will dye off much sooner than winter rye as well in the fall. Winter rye will stay green under the snow for a long time. And the biggest added benefit of winter rye is that it will come back strong in very early spring and provide some food then too.
