Iron Silk

What do you all think of iron silk? I used it a lot last year and I don't know what to think, sometimes I could not break the stuff if I wanted to, but sometimes I would break off on wood or docks with not a lot of resistance, it does cast nice, somethings not right with this line, some times I would break it tying a Knot. What do you all think and what to do you use? I love powerpro, ecept for little Knots from time to time with spinning tackle. AJ

I've used iron silk on both my spinning and baitcasting reels and have really liked it. But I did find that you really have to inspect your line often for frays and dings. Plus if you don't change your line very often it has really bad line memory so your line is always bunching up and twisted which leads to a cut in casting distance and lure performance. Other than that I liked it. However, I've switched lines to the highend braided lines. No line memory and very strong.

I did try Ironsilk last summer and did not really care for the line. Andy, I did have the same problem you did with the line breaking when trying knots. I have been using P-line for past few years on most of my rods and have enjoyed very good success with it. If you like using mono on spinning rods I suggest trying P-line's flouroclear, it has a small diameter and is super strong with little to no memory. As for the superlines I use it only on my dock rods and flippin' sticks.

This is interesting since their whole advertising campaign is based on how abrasive rocks and trees are and you need a tough line like IronSilk. I haven't used it yet, but I bought some recently. I wished this thread came out a little earlier. What are your opinions on Stren Super Braid?

I'm considering changing line for next season. 90% of my fishing is done walking streams and I usually fish with light line. Most frequently I've used Stren MagnaThin. I've tried Stren Easy Cast and some Berkley product and seem to have a lot of line memory issues. These lines tend to cause a rats nest for my spinning rig and I just don't want to waist my fishing time pealing off line. Can anyone tell me more about this P-Line?

I have not used iron silk, but I have read, maybe here somewhere, that when tying a knot you need to have the line wet. I guess what happens when you don't wet the line a lot of friction is generated causing the line to get hot thus compromising the strength and diameter of the line.

I have power pro too on my reels. Love not having to contend with memory issues and bird nests that mono produces. I have heard that the stren braid is almost similar to power pro. More expensive. I think they have more diameters to choose from, like the magical 10lb diameter that power pro doesn't have.

I only got to fish Stren Super Braid for about 20 days last Oct. the spool I was sent was in the 60 pound range so I used it on one of my heavy flipping sticks. I liked what I saw and now I'm looking forward to testing this braid in the lower weight ranges. I've used power pro almost exclusivly for my braid applications.

Lunker,

P-line is mono coated in flourocarbon. It's a good tough line, but like every mono line it has memory issues. Try using Reel Magic on the spool(line lube). This helps some.

Power Pro is my braided choice. (topwater/flippen/pitchen)
P-line for my finese (spelling) approach
Seagar (100% Flourocarbon - sinks)on baitcasters/cranking reel. Spendy!!!

I will not go back to fire line ever again!

I haven't tried the Stren super braid yet, but picked some up to try this year. I think it looks pretty good, but time will tell.

As far as the Iron silk, it may be a good line. Everyone looks for a little different qualities in a line, so it may work well for you, I just didn't care for it.

I tried Iron Silk. I think it was on my spinning reel all of two weeks.

It had memory problems much quicker than regular mono, plus it knots literally snapped as I cinched them. This was on 10-pound test.

It is very strong line, but I think it lost flexibility when it gained tensile strength. It would make a great tow rope, but it lacks a lot qualities -- particularly on spinning gear.

I have found "high strength" mono to be sorry products overall. If I want the extra-strong, long stretch, I stay with power pro (wonderful on spinning reels (no memory)) and a must for your heavy bait casters.

For mono products, go with standard, name brands. I liked the Stren (I think) extra-limp, which is a great quality for fishing line, but should be avoided in most other areas of male interest.
