Bluegill hits topwater

Was out bass fishing topwater last weekend and managed to catch some monster gills on a hoola popper have their size, Must of been some hungry buggers lol Anyone else accidentally catch them topwater before?

As a kid I used lil poppers on the fly rod all the time and caught everything with them, very fun. Thanks for the post reminds me I still have some and know what I'm going to do next time out with the kids.

They'll hit poppers or torpedoes all the time.

BartmanMN- Your probably right, I Have seen a lot of panfish up shallow protecting their beds recently.

I have not caught any topwater but I rarely fish that way. I did have one repeatedly chase and hit a bobber one time (3-4 times) when I was drifting with the wind in about 7-8 ft of water pulling a slip bobber rig. It was kind of funny to watch.

We caught probably a dozen gills using a #7 rattlin' raps a couple weekends ago. They were right off of weed edges in about 10FOW, so I doubt it had anything to do with beds in this case. It was a little odd to say the least.

Had a gill nail my X rap last night too.

Had a gill hit my skitter pop and I hooked him. He was about the size of my lure. Also had two very big gills hit my 1/2 flippin jig. After I missed them I grabbed a drop shot with a 7" worm on it and caught both of them!

Bluegills sure are active fish. They try to eat a bait half there size or bigger then them.

the small gills will hit the poppers but wont get hooked but the big bulls will
