Rate your spring 'shrooming season...

How did the morels treat you this year?

We had a decent black morel season, but it came WAY late and ended way too early due to heat and little-to-no rain during the season at all. We spent a lot of time guiding, so we didn't bag nearly as many this year to tide us over through the year. Might end up living off lobsters and COW and hen this winter... wink

Our yellow morel season was the best ever. Took a trip to the Metro and did very well down there, also taking some good dryad's saddle, which we're void of up north for the most part...

I ended my spring session before moving over to full throttle fishing with a big multi-species run. Picked the last of the yellows I could find in northern MN and then jumped around for other groceries...

Spring was an 8 due to some new stuff hunted, new areas tried, etc... Numbers-wise, I'd put it in the 6-7 range. We've had much stronger years.

Be sure to check out the "Minnesota Mushroom Forum" on Facebook and try to get in on some of the forays or classes this summer. A lot of stuff going on, including guided mushroom hunts!

I'd rate mine a 0 out of 10 because I knew they were out, knew where to look, and didn't have time to go out even a single time.

I'll be in Canada all of next week so hopefully, with all the rain they've been getting, there will be a good oyster crop. Lake trout over a hot bed of coals covered in fresh picked mushrooms sounds like a tasty shore lunch.

I'm hoping for a good summer season. The girlfriend likes chanterelles more than morels anyways. I was given strict orders, after using up the last package, to find even more this year.

My Morel season was the best I've ever had..........was also the first I've ever had wink

Haven't chased anything else really but found my first Ramps ever. And Fiddleheads. So that is pretty cool. Just starting to find Oysters.

Overall this is a pretty darn good Spring.

To my knowledge it was my 3rd season and I found more than I have in my first two seasons combined. But I also walked a bunch more this year so it pays to start were people stop. full-24389-46725-img_20140527_202534_511

Seemed like the season was too short. Yellows came before the grays which was a new experience for me. Ramps were almost done by the time the morels started. Way too cold for too long into May.

Now that we got all this rain, I have to imagine the heat the next few days should get something new growing in the woods. May have to pack the book and go looking.

My worst morel season. My best early spot produced a nice haul. After that, my other spots were terrible. I think the soil didn't get warm fast enough, then we had a lack of rain. One of my favorite seasons of the year and it was a disapointment. I hope my fishing season is better than morel season.

In the dry sandy, non traditional, not many elm, central part of the state, have talked to a few others like myself who had a great year for morels. Oysters have been plentiful as well. Have seen numerous coral and a few early lobsters popping. Small puff balls are everywhere as well. Personally, this year, so far, would be rated as a 10 except that the bugs have made it nearly impossible for the non die-hards without any commercial interest to get out.....and more shrooms have not been a big enough pull to slather myself in 40 volume deet. Have a few chant and king bolete spots that will hit up in a few weeks or so, but an ultimately waiting for fall when the bugs start to slack off. ..

Good point PB, my goodness the little buggers are out and about in all their glory.......yuck. I love shrooming, but I also love keeping the quarts in my body at a reasonable level.

Catch 22 I suppose. All the rain that made it a good year, for my spots anyway, has hatched a lot more skeeters, a lot earlier this year. The traditional nasty summer hatch has just arrived on que here. Can barely walk in the yard, much less the woods. Hope the bats, dragonflys, and other such critters have some room left in their tummies. ...

I know what you mean. The few good oyster spots I have are only about 40' off the road smile Which is far enough when I have to walk through skeeter swamps to get there.

pushbutton, you'd better get out the Deet and go for a walk... Lots of kings out in the central part of the state, and they're all being destroyed by worms as you sit back and wait for the skeeters to die off... wink

Chants and trumpets are out as well. Kids and I were out for a short stint on Sat. and picked a bunch of trumps and some yellowfoot. Scaber stalks are also out in full force, and the amanitas are going bonkers. Is this July, or Sept.?

Too funny! Literally just got done with sending a text to Stick in Mud about shrooms and such. Mrs pushbutton requires us to use hipster "organic"

deet.....which ain't the best wink but the allure of chants will certainly get us out. Talked to Ann and D Jay who had a good time on one of your forays earlier this year.....

pb, very cool that you know Ann and DJ! Loved those two, and really enjoyed having them in my group. Ann was in my daughter's car seat at the end of the first day because she didn't want to go back to camp with the rest of her crew. They were diehards, and did well.

JP, if you text me about 'shrooms while I'm trying to sleep one more time I'm going to drive down there and pick your acreage and not tell you what I found. wink Let's get together soon... actually, give me a call, I may be headed your way to pick on Sunday.

I've actually been having pretty bad luck out there. I did find a few amanitas and a bunch of LBM's, but the edibles are pretty scarce in the woods I usually wander. Not that it's that surprising...I've usually gotta head north an hour or so before I find any decent numbers of trumpets, chants, or boletes. frown

Been picking quite a few trumpets and some yellowfoot, but haven't been out for chants yet. Was hoping to do so today! Last week we picked a bunch of scaber stalks, and the oysters are still popping like crazy with the rain...
