Opener thoughts...

Males are making beds and cruising the shallows of my opener destination.

Did a scouting run this afternoon before work.

Saw 3 larger fish up super shallow.

Going to be an epic opener.

Will be on the water at midnight.

It will be on like Donkey Kong.

With all the fancy bass fishing lures and baits I have rigged up on all my rods, I have to chuckle when I think about what my Father-in-law used to hammer the bass with on the opener. Granted this was probably 25 years ago and as we all know, the bass are much smarter today, then they were back then.

He just used a blue jointed floating rapala, fished like a top water along the edges of pencil reeds and he would out fish all of us. His other favorite was a bobber and a leech.

My dad loved the bobber and leech too. That and a Beetle Spin were his go-tos for bass fishing.

When my dad got tired off throwing those fancy lures that I made him use, his favorite was a Bobber and a blob of a couple crawlers. It always worked when things were slow back in the day. His favorite lure to talk about was the "Crazy Crawler", though I never did actually see him catch more than maybe one on it!

Around here, we fish with Crazy Crawlers, Jitterbugs and Injured Minnows-the real ones, made of wood with glass eyes. A lotta guys tell us you can't catch these "modern bass" on those 1940's vintage plugs.

Ya wanna bet?

And we only fish topwater. No plastic made in the orient worms and lizards; no flavor injected plastic worms; no half-pound rubber skirted propeller driven whiz-bang devices and no gobs of worms.

Look for us on a lake near you!
