ANCHOR HELP - Digger or Richter

Recommended Posts

I am looking at purchasing a new anchor for my Alumacraft Tournament Sport 185. Looking at Digger or Richter I fish everything from the Missouri River, Devils Lake, LOW, etc. Can anyone recommend which anchor to buy. I like the looks of the Richter but not sure how well it would release in a lake like Devils Lake(ie. a lot of deadfalls). Wasn't sure how digger would do in softer sediment. I appreciate anyone's opinions. Thanks in advance.

I have used the Richter for years and have always been satisfied with it's performance. I use a 6' chain between the anchor and anchor rope. It hooks up very well whether fishing on a lake in sand or a river and rock. Probably more important is having plenty of rope to allow a good angle from boat to anchor.

I second the Cat River Anchors. they are the only anchors I will use from now on. for a boat your size I would get the 16 or 20 lbs model. the 10 lbs model would hold your 18 footer but only on calmer days. I was introduced to these anchor by my friend that is a cat fish guide up on the red river. he helped do the testing on these. he tested the 10 lbs with his 19 foot boat and it held for him but only in the slower flowing water. he mainly uses the 20 lbs models. I have the 20 lbs model right now and I will be getting a 10 lbs one for using in the lakes I fish. the 20 works in the lakes but is almost to heavy for lakes. I do like the 20 in the river thou.

regardless of what anchor you go with the rule to use when it comes to the rope is that you want 3 feet of rope for every foot of depth you are in. so as a example you would want 30 feet of rope if you are in 10 feet of water.

I used a Richter for years and then got a DIGGER. The DIGGER has done very well for me in both lakes and the river.

Both have alot of rope and the Richter has a 4ft section of chain also. I go with 2ft of rope per ft of depth.

To me, a horse a piece.

Good evening Gonehunting,

Up on Rainy Lake I have used a danforth anchor for more than 30 years. Never had any trouble catching hold in all conditions. I have 5 feet of chain then 150 feet of rope. I've never used the digger or ritcher so can't give any advice.
