bass (what's considered good size?)

so the mrs. and i are out on indy last week and i caught a 22 inch largemouth on a leech and bobber in really shallow water. I was impressed since that was the largest bass I have caught so far. so I tell the brother in law and he is not impressed. is that not large?
also thanks for the posts on my speed trolling questions.

I'm guessing he's not a fisherman, because if you said that to anyone else with half a clue they would congratulate you on your awesome catch(no disrespect to your bro in law)maybe he' just jealous!!! Anyways that's an awsesome catch, hope you took some pictures!

I agree with that being an excellent size bass for up in Minnesota, but my one question is where does your brother-n-law originally come from. If he is from a southern state, then that is not considered to be a wall hanger. I lived down in Arkansas and Louisiana for some years and was astonished to see the average increase in size for the largemouths. You can't even brag down there if ya catch 5-6lb bass.

Nice fish, man! Don't let anyone tell ya otherwise! I've yet to break the 3 lb. mark (in my own defense, I don't fish bass often) in MN, but yeah, if he's "southern exposure" he may not impressed. Minnesota has a short growing season for LM bass, so the don't get super-fatty-sow-belly-bucketmouth-huge. I'm still impressed!

That's a very nice fish, I am an avid bass angler and I haven't broken the 20 inch mark yet, though i've gotten several over 4lb's. Good fish, the brother in law must live in florida or something if he thinks that's not good!

thanks for the kudos guys... What do you think that thing weighed? reason i ask is that i have this lame shakespeare spring loaded scale so the accuracy is probabaly off but it said a little over 5lbs.
the thing is im actually from florida so i have seen those okeechobee monsters but was young and not yet interested in fishing. the brother in law is an avid fisherman and has seen some beasts in his day.
ive only had my boat for 2 years so im getting used to the fact that i have a new kind of access and the new techniques of fishing in a boat. so far ive had great success... thanks again guys. i'll be heading out to wisconsin to hunt for some pike so wish me success.

Bigger than I have caught yet. Mabey somewhere like fla. or down south that's just OK but I am jealous of that fish any day. If ya took pics, post a couple here if you can.

That would be considered a monster even by the tournament guys here in MN. I think the Average size here is right around 2lbs. for the most part, unless you have a secret hole, which most do.
I would guess your scale is pretty close. I had a 20 inch weigh in at 4 1/2lbs on a Rapala digital scale earlier this year. Doesn't matter though, I'd take one that size anyday, and so would any of the guys on the forum.
Sweet catch.

I've only caught one that went 4lbs; it was only 18" but it was caught right after the season opened and was still fat from post-spawn.

Otherwise the only other one I got near that size was a skinny 19"er that only went 3.7 I know a lake where I commonly catch 16-18" fish almost every time I go out; but have yet to catch many that are larger than that.

A 22" bass is a very nice fish no matter WHAT part of country you are in. Your brother is just trying to be a jerk. Even in bass tournaments here and in the south, you would crossing your fingers for the big fish trophy with a 22"er...

My .02

Depending on the girth that fish could be from a high 4 (really thin and sickly) to a legit 7lb fish if it was really fat pig. If it was a healthy fish it should be over 6lbs. I would say a 6lber or 22 inch MN bass is the equavlent of a 10lber in Fla,Cal, or Texas.

I think most of us hardcore bass guys will go a long time between 22inch fish even on really good bass waters.
