Recommend me a Panfish Rod

Lusid

Recommended Posts

Hopefully there is a such a thing where I can target both crappies / bluegils with one rod.

I'm thinking a 5-6" (2 piece section). Can you guys list some brands I can research?

Retailers I would buy from:

Cabelas or BassPro

thnx

pretty vague...what type of fishing do you do? bobber, jig, or cast and retrieve? My favorite is a lite action 6' st. croix premier...match that with a good small real and you are set to attack the above options but if you do more of one or the other size of rod maybe different.

Just got a St. Croix Panfish series 7' one piece. It is, without debate, THEEE FUNNEST ROD I HAVE EVER HAD! Every sunfish you catch is the biggest sunny you've ever caught in your life. It's extremely sensitive and the only thing that can throw a flu flu further is a fly rod.

Note - I have a lot of rods and only fish for panfish when I can't chase muskies.

I'll second the St Croix panfish series, I got the 6'9" and think it's perfect. Good backbone and can throw the smaller jigs farther than most other rods. I like berkley nanofil with a fluoro leader on it.

St. Croix's are great. I have 2 gander mountain series ultra lights in 7 feet which are 2 piece rods and they do not cost that much and are very good. I use small floats most of the time with them. If I am not using a float the st croix is what i use.

Depends on how much you are looking to spend and which type of techniques you are looking to use the rod for. Before I upgraded all of my rods to St. Croix's I was using a Cabela's Pro Guide PTC 6'0" UL Rod. For the money I couldn't find a better rod in it's price point. I paid roughly $34.99 when it was on sale and it was one of the most versatile rods I owned for panfish.

With that said, I upgraded to the St. Croix Panfish Series Rods and haven't looked back, excellent rods for the angler that wants a better quality product wink

9' 5wt TFO signature II.

You didn't specify type of fishing laugh Seriously though, if you're targeting pannies, you might want to try out fly fishing. I get frustrated with small jigs on a spinning rod, but they are a piece of cake to fish with a fly rod.

I'm guessing Lusid has already purchased himself a new panfish rod, but I thought I'd throw in a recommendation since he said he'd buy from Cabela's.

I picked up a 7' Cabela's Prodigy rod and Pflueger Summit 25 reel this year and spooled it with 4 lb Trilene XL. Simple but fun. It's been my number 1 rod this year so far including fishing for walleyes. It was a blast last weekend too catching a bunch of smallies on my crappie rig.

I've just been flat out happy with the purchase. But who wouldn't be when the set up only costs you $15 out the door after redeeming your points. wink
