Coyote Attack

I had a coyote attack a group of birds I was working today. They all got away but it sent them scattering in all directions.

Just wondering how common that is, if anyone has seen it, and if you think it will alter the birds pattern? That day or multiple days? Wondering if I should move location?

Well if you don't move take him out next time and you wouldn't have that problem again! wink

It happens and they're used to it. They might move a ways off for a day but the yote or another might find them there too.

We actually took a Boss tom FROM a yote one year. We were creeping along a creek bed and came across a yote chasing a tom around in circles. The yote smelled us and took off but the beat up tom ditched for cover and sat there long enough for my friend to get close enough for a shot. Not my preferred way of getting one but my friend was just happy to fill his tag.

The flock stayed on the same property but changed fields.

I had a coyote a few years back creep in at legal shooting light and hit the decoy. When that coyote hit that plastic decoy, I bet he jumped 10 feet in the air while trying to get the heck out of there. Had there not been two toms gobbling and roosted close by, the coyote would have gotten some 5 shot.

In your case, it happens everyday in the woods. If the birds moved on whenever a coyote interrupted them, they'd never quit moving!

Ironically after reading this thread last night, I had a little 'yote encounter of my own today. Had a bird coming in after lunch and all of a sudden all hell breaks loose! Lots of putting and chasing and then quiet. I call again and 10 minutes later the dog comes in at 50 MPH right at my decoy. When he was close and the "hen" didn't bust, he freaked out and bolted...10 yards in front of me. If I was ready, I would have cranked him...but what do you do with a spring coyote anyway.

I put the little bit of excitement into the + column. Otherwise, a crappy day. Man, those gobblers are tight lipped this season!

Next morning I moved in the direction they were originally coming from. They were a No Show. Heard some gobbling but they went in another direction.

Hunting some private land with lots of hills (near Caledonia) probably a couple hundred acres. 3 Toms have been taken off the property, one in each of the first 3 seasons. Starting to wonder if the pressure has made them wary.

Turkey frustration continues........
