Anyone pre-scouting new ground for morels?

Recommended Posts

Now that winter is starting to lose it's grip on the midwest, I was thinking about heading out to scout some new territory for mushrooms. I realize it's far too early for morels yet, but I wonder if it's not a good time to search out some dead and dying trees, and maybe even stumble on some antlers.

I did quite a bit of snowshoeing and looking for morel spots. Found a few...we'll see if they produce. Most of the land I have access to isn't very good morel ground. I was thinking about heading to some relatively nearby WMA's to walk some trails, but we'll see if I can actually get the motivation.

Not sure how per-scouting for Morels would work. Sometimes you can miss them altogether by a week one way or another even where they do grow which can be a pain! cry

I just looked for dead elms. But you're right, I have no idea if it'll have been a complete waste of time. It was mostly an excuse to get myself out of the house during this interminable winter.

Well, thats always worth doing! grin

I scouted about a 80 acres of new land today. Found where the dead elms were. Also found tons of distressed oaks that may hold Hens later on. Also found tons of deer bones and some kill sites. Lots of wildlife out today.
