Jaybird
I'm running an old FL-8. I've noticed an odd phenomenom for a long time now. When I jerk my jig up quickly, like in a missed hook-set, a lot of clutter appears on the screen, mostly in the upper part of the water column. It lingers for a while and then fades away. Seems to disappear quicker if I reel up. Anyone else seeing this? If so, any idea what causes it?

Stringerless!
+1. I have an old vex too and only see this with bigger lures. I can reduce it by ripping the lure hard a few times on the way down.

Another thought might be the line and lure causing a ripple in the water and this ripple or wave is being picked up by the sonar unit. Sonar works by sending a sound wave and based on the time it takes for the echo to return calculates the distance to various objects. A wave in the water column could reflect an echo back to the receiver.
BoxMN
I think it happens more with fireline/braid than mono as well.
wishing for walleyes
I think it happens more with fireline/braid than mono as well. It sure does. I quit using fireline because of this.
NCLaker
Weird, by do you think fireline/braid makes that problem worse?I don't use it anyways because of how bad it ices up when I'm hole hopping.
