New Hand held GPS

DRH1175

Question

I believe my Ifinder Expedition c took a dump. I need a new GPS for Ice fishing. I have the Navionics app for my Android however, I would like a nice waterproof GPS unit. Does anyone make one that work with the Chips that is worth buying?

Check out the Garmin line.

Yep, take a look at the Etrex 20 or 30, GPSMap 62s or 78 ( the 78 floats ), Oregon series ( touchscreen models ), Montana or if you want to buy a fancy one, the Monterra.

Garmin has a nice way to compare features in each GPS device on their HSOforum.

Get the Garmin Upper Midwest Fishing Guide chip and you're set.

Reeds puts together a nice bundle with the handheld GPS and the Upper Midwest Fishing Guide chip, free shipping to boot.

Get the good AA batteries, you'll want something like the energizer advanced lithiums.

How does the Garmin upper Midwest map compare to the Lakemaster? I have the Lakemaster for my Lowrance and loved the detail. The Garmin Lakemaster chips can still be had on the internet.

I have the Midwest data on my Colorado and I feel its identical. Some have claimed otherwise but I've foud it every bit as accurate as Lakemsters which leads me to believe that garmin purchased the data from Lakemaster.

The nice thing about the Midwest chip is that you get so many more lakes for your money. No need to pay an extra $100 for the LOTW chip.

Those lakes you mentioned are all in 1 ft contours according to Garmin's site.

You can see a complete listing on Garmin's site on what this chip covers and you can also see an interactive map and get a visual idea too of how some lakes are covered, just keep in mind its just a taste, the full blown chip is better than what the interactive map gives you.

Garmin Oregon 450 with upper MW fishing guide chip for $339 or the Lowrance endura safari with the lowrance 2012 hd chip for $279. Anyone have a suggestion for fishing Mille Lacs, Winni, and LOTW.
