I am in a knot slump!!!

Lost 6 expensive ice jigs this past weekend. Two were pike the rest were bad knots. I am using .004 dia. 2 lb pound test p-line that I believe is good line (not old) for blue gills. The first two were a palomar knot. I think the palomar weakens the line above the knot. I need some knot help. I do always wet the line. Any tips would be great.

Thanks

Is it fluorocarbon pline? If so, I'd try a pitzen knot, otherwise you may just not be tying a good palomar. If you think the line is weakening above the knot you're probably sinching the tag end before the main line.

have had the same problem when I am using a palomar and I believe what you say also about weakening the line above the knot. Anything under six pound test I stick to the trilene knot with mono or any type of non braid or super line. Maybe I am not tightening mine correctly either But I have used the knot with lots of other lines and no problems.

I also recommends the surgeons knot when using tungsten or other small jigs.

Your such a Thunderpumper. I like to use the knot on the back of the Fiska package. Not sure what its officially called. I have found it to be very strong and it seems to reduce some of the spinning of the jig. Of course we already had that discussion this past weekend. Any one else try that knot?

I think they have the Palomar knot on the back.

I also use the Trilene knot for anything I tie to any line (other than my musky leaders to 80 lb braid) and I rarely have knot issues. With light line, I think it's very important to make sure the knot stays wet and to also tighten it down slowly and carefully to make sure the line above the knot doesn't abraid at all.

I was using fluorocarbon line as a leader in my fish house as leaders for the rattle lines. For about 2 or 3 years I tried different knots, brands of line and I would keep on breaking the line on some of the hook sets on walleyes. It happened enough times that it really got me mad. I tried everyone's ideas from here. Finally I just went back to Trilene mono line and I don't break it on the hook set. My theory is that the fluorocarbon lines do not work good in the cold, I have no trouble using it in the summer as leaders. Even if my theory is wrong about the cold, I really don't think my catch is less using mono. There is not anything worst than when the rattle reel goes off and you are hoping the line or knot will not break, with momo that thought had disappeared. Rick

I use palomer knot on lots of my jigs. I havent had a knot fail since I learned to use the tag end more when tightening and make sure everything is comming together good before cinching tight. its the strongest knot (95% tensile strength). if its thinning the line then you are tightening it before the knot is close enough to the eyelet.

Dont forget to lube!

animated knots by gorg (sp?) (google it) is a great HSOforum.

I have only used an improved clinch on mono and flouro and have never had issues. Palomar knot for all braided, I've never tried a palomar for anything but braid, definitely one of the easiest to tie though, I may have to test it out on other lines.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
