Wood filler for cedar T&G? Nail holes?

Do you guys fill your nail/staple holes when you put up your cedar tongue & groove. I used the small 1/4 staples, I was scared to just use brad nails thinking they wouldn't hold very good in the thin material. I looked for some filler and haven't found anything that was close? Thanks

Its to late now but you should have asked how do I blind nail T&G,The staples wouldn't need filler. That said,Use a fine toothed saw blade like a plywood blade,Make lots of cuts in the scrap cedar save the saw dust,Mix that saw dust with some yellow carpenters glue,Make a stiff paste.Use that as the filler. It will have to be filled twice,The first fill will shrink abit.then sand it flush and finish.

It's easier to just fill the hole with the wood glue and then sand over it right away while it is still wet. Wipe off the excess wood glue from everywhere but the hole before sanding. The dust will settle on the surface of the wood glue and the hole will almost disappear.

I'd try one of those wax stick fillers that look like a big crayon. Easy to use and they have lots of colors to choose from so you should be able to get a good match. Note that these are used after the finish is applied.

Okay jentz... How do you blind staple T&G I still have the v front left? Thanks for the suggestions. Not using any stain just thinking clear polyurethane, any suggestions on brands of that? Want something that will not yellow over time. Thanks

Install with the tongue up. On the bottom row you face nail it on the bottom then nail right through the bottom of the tongue right where the profile starts. Then the next piece overlaps the tongue and covers up the nail. If you nail too low you will see the fastener and if you nail too high the fastener will keep the next piece from sitting all the way down like it should. If you have ever seen hardwood flooring nailed it is the same concept except vertical.

As far as filling holes, if this is prefinished cedar then get some of the wood putty from the local HDWE/Lumber store in the closest color they have. Put it in the hole with your finger and wipe off completely with a clean dry rag.

I don't see how it's possible on the 5/16 thick material. If I brad nailed the tongue I think it would split right off. Cedar is unfinished, I couldn't find any prefinished because that for sure would have been my preference. Thanks

That's pretty much what I found with that Cedar T&G when finishing my house. I originally was doing that but eventually said screw it and just started nailing near the tongue instead of on it. I didn't fill any nail holes, it's just a fish house wink
