Quick question. When have you needed to quick change reels?? I carry enough combos to have never worried about changing a reel on the ice....

I move my expensive reels back and forth between my summer and winter rods. It's only once a year, but a fast and easy method is good.

I switch out fly reels and spinning reels on my panfish set ups depending on how deep I will be fishing that day...

I hate to say it, but cold snap is ridiculous on their price. For a ring they want $0.63 cents, My way a ring is $0.014 cents. I can by 45 rings for what cold snap wants for one. Their is no difference, and if you look I believe the original color was green.............nothing like screwing people and charging ridiculous margins to the unaware. Maybe I should sell a PAC of 100 rod rings on the bay for $10 and make some money lol.

You have to realize that Coldsnap is a business. If they sold their product for what they have into it, they wouldn't have a business. Not everyone has an ag store with castration bands in their neighborhood. I can grow vegetables cheaper than the grocery store sells them, but I don't have the land to do it on. So I pay a premium to purchase them. Same concept. Congrats, you found a cheaper way to do it. They came up with an idea (or recognized an opportunity that someone else thought of) and marketed it. Most products for ice fishing came about the same way. smile

The problem is their product (castration bands) is readily available to the general public at a fraction of the price.

google makes everything convenient

Good luck with your vegetable garden

everything is readily available, there are tons of things i can make, use, whatever a fraction of what it cost to purchase from someone else. either from the store or online. i can make a nice noodle rod for a fraction of what it costs to purchase it from someone, i can build reel weeds for pennies compared to what they cost. some guys buy buckets for 20-30 bucks when i can get the same at menards for 5 and make the simple mods myself. COGS is not the only factor a business takes into consideration.

businesses have loss leaders and money makers. it helps even things out and allows them to stay profitable. There are items you sometimes have to charge more for TO GET people to buy them. I have seen businesses that sold a product so inexpensively that noone would buy it because they didn't think it would work. they literally doubled the price and they couldn't keep them on the shelves. supply and demand is a great thing.

I don't believe anyone is arguing with you. However, when all you are buying is a package of bands to put on rods yourself, and there is no service with the product don't get upset when someone buys or shows people that they can save money by buying the same product marketed for a different use. It is up to the consumer on what they will want to do and purchase, This happens all the time. For instance lawn fertilizers. Once a few people learned that they could get 50lbs of fertilizer for their laws from agronomy centers that sell fertilizer for Ag production for $5 in our area many people quit buying 20 lb bags from stores at $20. Then they learned they could do the same with herbicides for the lawns. This is no different. I wouldn't worry about people figuring out cost effective means.

You're exactly right. I was simply trying to explain why they charge more than what you can find the supplies for. I bought a Coldsnap auger blade cover from them and they threw in a set of the reel bands for free. I doubt you will get a free product from your local ag store. Not to mention the small talk we made about local ice conditions. A lot of people are willing to spend a little more at a mom & pop bait shop for bait and tackle than they are at a big box store for similar reasons - small talk, local knowledge, one-on-one demonstrations, advice, etc.

A lot is in how you value things. If I knew everything about ice fishing, I wouldn't be on a forum learning from others, or purchasing new products, trying to make my time on the ice more successful and efficient. To each their own.

Actually we gave away free crab grass preventer....was just yellow rinseate from the sprayer was glad to get rid of it.

Sounds like your willing to spend the money not for the product, but for other stuff/info. That might work for you, but that isn't a service you get when buying a bag at the store or ordering online.

Also, the "supplies" we find in the store are marked up already. I don't understand how it's any different to pull a bag of 100 of the shelf has castration bands or pull a bag off the shelf has cold snap reel wraps

I think I'm going to start buying Costco bags of 20 apples and sell the apples 1 at a time for 3 times the price of the original bag of 20.

Looks like I'll have a pretty good market judging by some of these posts

thats the beauty of America and capitalism. go for it.

Here is an honest question, why don't all ice rods have reel seats like a summer rod?

A good question too!

Weight. Cost. Feel. Combination of the 3?

This is a question for a GOOD custom ice rod builder. Maybe email, call, or text the guys at TUCR and they might have an answer for you.

I was just reading the post and saw all the great ideas. Has anyone ever tried heat shrink tubes, like for electrical wiring? It would be clean and nice looking, have a rubberized non-slip finish. Changing out a reel would probably not be a option on the ice, but you always have the option to carry a extra rod and reel. I will try this and let you know how it goes.

vet wrap.....Just as good as tape, no sticky mess! I have used the tape and the rings, this is what works for me.....

And as far as the "cold snap" brand not ruining cork like regular castration bands.... Even one of their demo rods has the indentations from the bands.

Eric a rep admitted the bands from cold snap are the same has castration rings. What is this vet wrap you talk of?
