My sons and I had a great trip even though the hunting was slow at times we ended up shooting 46 ducks which was not a bad total by any means.

The first day Thursday we went into a pond/slough blind and got a three man limit and those were turned into jerky that evening. the next couple of days were very disappointing and slow would put it mildly. Friday we sat on Pelican/Devils lake the whole day duck hunting which included breakfast of bacon and caramel rolls and a lunch which was wild rice brats over a small fire my son conjured up. and the birds were just not on the big water like they have been in the past, but we still managed birds ,just not the limit that we have come accustom to getting, but that's why they call it hunting.

Saturday we decided to go to another spot on the big water in which we scouted Friday afternoon and notice birds using that area.

We set up Friday morning and did the waiting game, it was sunny and wind out of the North West and the birds again seemed nonexistent. Still we managed a few birds before 11 am . I told my boys we need to change things up for the afternoon so we gathered our decoys up and headed to shore for some lunch and refocus our thoughts on what to do.

It was a beautiful day and the wind was laying down so I told my boys lets not hunt lets go catch some Devils Lake perch and Eyes and we did just that we spent about 3.5 hours fishing and immediately got into the pike caught and released over 15 pike in the 3 to 6 pound range after losing 20 plus jigs between us I decided to make a run for the Mauve Coulee area and fish for perch and eyes.

Upon arriving I noticed fish suspended at 12-16 feet in 19 fow we dropped down jigs and minnows and stated catching small walleyes on the bottom. think that the suspended fish were white bass and are so much fun to catch I dropped down a small pink/white tube jig and a couple minuets later got hit and to my surprise I pulled in a Devils Lake crappie.

Now you might not think that this would be a big deal but I know that they are a elusive fish to catch on Devils lake and a couple of the locals said they have been trying to catch them for years with no luck ,but that was not the all as my boys were hoisting in jumbo perch all I could catch were crappies I caught 5 of them. they were not the biggest crappies but they were keepers in any lake in Minnesota, they were 9-12 inches. The Perch were 9-13.5 inches and we even got a few nice eyes.

After a joyous fishing trip we planned out our last morning hunt which was to hit another one of those prairie sloughs that we had spotted on our first day out.

Sunday morning the wind was blowing and the snow was coming down and I knew it would be a great morning to be in the blind. We got set up 10 minuets before shooting time and birds were buzzing our decoys so we waited and just as I excepted we had the best shoot of the week. We downed our limit in a few hours which included beautiful red heads, buffies, ring necks, a drake mallard and a shovler. After all was said and done we had 16 birds on the blind floor and lost two birds due to them doing the death dive. yes these birds were counted into the limit. wink

This was not the greatest hunt that I have ever had but It was a great time and probably the most enjoyable of any hunt that I have had in NoDak because I got to spend it with both of my boys that are becoming quite the sportsmen in there own right and am proud to call them my hunting partners.

I will try to post some pictures later today. I didn't take any pics, but my son Joey did and am waiting him to send them to me.

All I can say is I can't wait until I get back to NoDak to experience the spectacle of my favorite sport of waterfowling.

Great report Gordie! Love that you guys did the multi-species approach! That's my absolute favorite thing about late fall. If the birds aren't flying the fish are almost always biting!

Happy to hear you and your boys had such a good time. You're a great Dad!
