Toyota Timing Belt

Recommended Posts

I have a 2006 Highlander with 100,000 miles. My mechanic is recommending that I replace the timing belt ASAP for the tune of $1,000 (which includes replacing the water pump). I know the importance of a timing belt and understand that if it goes out I will have valve damage. But, it seems premature to replace it at 100,000. Anyone have any experience or recommendation on this?

Thanks.

my 2004 Sienna scheduled maintenance was 90k for the timing belt. The water pump wasn't needed at the time but it was only a little extra labor to have them do that as well. I figured while they were in there that close it wouldn't hurt and it didn't add to the price that much.

i think it cost me about $200 in parts that I bought offline and about $550 in labor but that was back in May of 2011.

I am at 130k now and it runs great and no issues at all.

3.3 liter?

There should be a supplement service guide in the pouch in the glove box that includes the owners manual. This will show you when all the services for your vehicle are recommended. I'm pretty sure 90k is the recommended service interval. As far as I know Current Toyota timing belt engines are not interference engines. With that being said if the belt breaks unexpectedly you can easily add a few hundred dollars onto the bill for towing and diagnostic time not to mention the unexpected disruption to your schedule. Its always best to replace before the break and the recommended service interval is a good guide.

The water pump is timing belt driven. the timing belt will need to be removed if the water pump needs to be replaces. Most places will quote labor for replacing the water pump which is usually about an extra half hour.
