efishsport
What would everyone recommend for a handheld GPS which mainly would be used for ice-fishing? Also, what chip to get? I mainly just fish MN lakes typically. Price range for the gps--under $300.
DLD24
I got the Garmin Oregon 450 and I like it I have the Lakemaster chip, but I'm thinking I'm going to get the Upper Midwest Fishing Guide from Garmin...I have heard the maps are the exact same, but with the UMFG you get LOW and lakes in ND,IA,MN,WI,IL,MI all for like $80 vs the lakemaster where you only get MN lakes (excluding LOW/Rainey)...And also I got the gps from e bay, for $199. Its refurbished, but its straight from Garmin and comes with a yr warranty..
MN Mike
Reeds usually puts together a good little combo pack with a Garmin GPS teamed up with the UMWFG lake chip, it's worth a look. This time of the year is a good time to be looking, I've seen some pretty good discounts on the GPSMap 62s ( $249 ) and Oregon 450's ( $199 )The Upper Midwest Fishing Guide is a very good chip and will more than likely cover what you need ( it has for me ), if there's any questions, you can 'test drive' the chip on Garmin's site.Mike
Lawrence Luoma
Whatever brand you get just make sure it has two things. #1 is an electronic compass. Otherwise the gps is worthless unless you are moving. It nice to be able to stop and look at the GPS and point the direction you need to go in relation to the map.#2 nowadays you'll need to match the brand of GPS to the MapChip that you like. Hawg
The phone app is $15 , includes Canada, and does't need a chip. It works as well as any GPS money can buy. Why even consider a handheld. Use the money to buy a smartphone if you don't have one.
woodsmanmn
If you have a smartphone and you're really cheap, check out the dnr's new mobile app with lake finder and maps. It's no gps but not bad for occasional use.
