Mudroom Addition at Cabin

Our cabin's main entrance comes right into the kitchen. In the Winter or when we have people up that area get's clogged with boots and shoes and ends up being wet from snow so we are planning on adding a mudroom that will then enter the kitchen area.

It's going to be about 8x10 or so and we'll have a bench at the end below one window and hooks and shelves to store some basic items. Anyone found any unique and/or useful designs or features that would compliment this project?

I'm lucky that I'm in the hardwood lumber business and basically have free materials and I have enough skills to make lockers, dividers etc so cost for those things is basically just my time.

Tell me more about your hardwood lumber business.

I am looking at doing the same thing. One of the things I am tossing around is putting in a smaller antique wood stove in the mud room to help dry out stuff and add some character.

we sell hardwood lumber to cabinet mfg, millwork companies etc. We also mfg and sell all interior mouldings like crown, cove, base, casing etc.

I thought about a wood stove also for the same reason but probably will put in a fake electric fireplace for convenience sake.

We have mudroom that comes in from attached garage, to mudroom to kitchen. Mudroom has washer/dryer. But have same issue of shoes. I built a shelf unit (tng pine sides) with shelves to fit locator charging in winter, tall boots at bottom, laundry bottles higher, crockpot at top, etc. with shoes in the middle - about 7 shelves total, and it has helped immensely!

Would be quick build for you but being able to store things going "up" a wall gives more room. Not doors, so you see it all, but simple and easy to use/access and works great. Good luck!

To get you may want to visit an closet design store. You will find many ideas for space utilization and design. I did a remodel of a walk in closet in my home and purchased a complete system from one of these companies. It is incredible how much storage you can build into a 10X10 space with the proper design.

Maybe go with more of a locker system along a wall without a window. The boot bench could be 20 inches tall and 24 inches deep. And have the top portion be 75 inches tall and 16 inches deep with a 15 in opening on top for gloves and hats or helmets. And you could add hooks on three sides of the locker it sort of recesses the coats and still leaves ample space to sit and put your boots on
