Propane filling

Recommended Posts

Getting ready to get my cabin tank refilled before winter. I only need a refill every 3-4 years as I only heat the basement. Last time I had it filled they sent me a contract to sign. In the wording it said that “Lessee agrees to purchase/pay for 800 gallons for a 500 gallon tank per year”. Needless to say I did not sign and send back. I know that when I call to have it filled this will be the first thing they ask for.

Question: Has anyone out there dealt with this before. I really do not want to go to smaller tanks and have to have them refilled all the time. It is nice to know I always have propane with the big tank and do not need to worry about it for 3-4 years at a time. I would even be willing to pay a little more for the tank rental…….Any one ever have to deal with this before?

Was this a new thing they have started that they didn't make you do in the past? It sounds like they are trying to cut down on the trip costs by making people fill more at one time. The real issue when your out in the middle of no where is to try and find another company that is more flexable when they maybe the only one around! frown

It is worded as they can/will bill you for it even if you do not use it?

I bought the place 6 years ago and it was full then and only had it filled once since then. That is when the contract was sent to me. I have been sitting on it since.

From what I have heard is try to find your own tank that way you can get it filled by anyone and you can search for the best price. Otherwise you are going to have to find another vendor to fill and exchange your tank.

I am just getting my first permanent propane tank. Those 100 pound bottles are getting a bit heavy for an old guy

The way it worked with Lakes Gas in Cook was that if you used enough gas the lease on the tank was free. I got a small tank, 120 gal, and the lease is like 59 dollars per year. Bigger tanks are free if you use enough gas, I don't know how much they are if you don't use enough.

Before you jump into your own tank, have you talked to the current supplier about the situation?

Perhaps, as was eluded to, they'll drop the 800 gal minimum for somewhat higher delivery charge or whatever. Might still be money ahead for many years doing that rather than having your own tank put in.

Yes, I will talk with them before I jump in and buy my own. With talking with the other cabin owners in the area most own their own? I missed the "Perhaps, as was eluded to, they'll drop the 800 gal minimum" you speak of?

Thanks for the feedback.
