Trolling lures in your propwash

Anyone use this technique? Interested in getting some more info or suggestions on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ie....how far back do you troll, how fast, what kind of lures work best etc?

Its not my first choice, but when I have 3 or more guys, one guy always has a lure about 20' back. I don't recommend it for walleye, but pike and muskie often hang out just a few feet under the surface, and I feel the splashing of a prop can really draw their attention.

With Muskie you just never know. I had it once while fishing a shore line and using my elec. trolling motor. I would hear a splash every once in a while from the back of the boat. When I checked; here was a Muskie with it's nose almost touching the slowly moving prop! It had followed for quite a ways!

Speed trolling. Works great for pike, particularly later in the Summer. I've done it with big spinner baits, pulling htem as fast as I can without the blades popping out of the water, and anywhere from 20 to 50 feet back from the motor.

Dont know if it helps u or not but there is an article from Jason Mitchell on the home page that talks about catching eyes in shallow water using deep diving cranks right behind the boat. Check it out something might pop out for u.

I don't think it's quite as effective for most fresh water species as for the salt water fishing I've had success with.. at least I've never gotten it to work well.

Also I guess most of my freshwater trolling is used for deeper fishing, any time I'm fishing closer to the surface, I'm casting and not trolling.

The #1 rule in trolling is have your lure a the right depth.

The prop is just a big spinner. Yep, your boat is just a big prop bait. laugh

It might be that you boat is spooking up baitfish. Kind of like seagull behind a plow.

As others said, short line, so the pike/

Muskie can come up from behind of you lure.
