Trailer lights on 2008 Ford Ranger

Recommended Posts

I have no running lights on my boat trailer. The trailer lights are brand new LED, and I've tried a couple different trailers. The brake lights and turn signals work fine. I've heard it could be a trailer light relay switch on the truck. Any ideas? Thanks.

The first thing to check would be all the ground wires. I had trouble with my new LEDs and found that the ground wire on the trailer was not properly attached. A few months later they were out again. One of the side lights had burned out, so if you have those, check the bulbs. I got one of those testers that have a little clip on a wire and a bulb in the "pen" with a sharp pin. Clamp it to a screw or bolt on the trailer to ground it then stick it into the wires. The bulb will light up if you have power. Start at the front of the trailer and work your way back to the lights until you find no power.

Check for power at the trailer connector. Turn on the park lights and the four way flashers. Two of the four pins should flash and one should be on steady. The steady one is the trailer running lights. If there is one without power than you can start buy checking the fuse for the trail running lights in the fuse block. Fuse 2, 10 amps, check the owners manual for location.

The relay looks like it controls all the park lamps for the whole vehicle, if they are working on the vehicle than the relay is fine.

If there is power on that wire at the connector than you will need to start tracing wires on the trailer.
