boat insurance recommendations?

Wondering if you have any recommendations for insuring my boat.

I am just starting to shop around, and I heard that some insurance companies will not cover you if you are in a tournament, not that I plan on fishing a bunch of tournaments but would like to know I am covered if I am.

Also how do most boat insurers handle theft?

Including equipment inside the boat.

Thanks

I'd start by calling the insurance company that covers your car/home/other toys. Usually but always your best bet is to bundle your coverage in order to qualify for discounts. Although you'll want to make sure you can get satisfactory answers to your questions regarding tournaments and theft. If you don't like their answers then its worth looking else where despite any discounts you may get for bundling coverage. Bundling your coverage isn't always better if it leaves you unprotected, it may save a few bucks but it could cost more in the long run.

I bundle mine with my vehicle and home insurance and it costs me about $300 a year just for the boat, trailer and contents. I haven't had a claim in 22 years but it only takes one that involves personal injury and you'll find out that insurance is a necessary evil.

A boat is like a dark hole in the water that you throw money into but I look at it as enjoyment especially when I am enjoying being on the water.

Check out different insurance companies and then buy the policy that you are comfortable with.

Good Luck!!!

Mike

I have my boat coverage with State Farm. I had a theft of approx 300 crankbaits and they covered every one. I did have a $100 ded.

I will say this, if you have alot of gear inside your boat, add it all up and make sure you buy enough coverage to cover it all. Might be suprised how many doolars you have in everything.

They did ask for proof that I did have that many crankbaits. I did have current photo's of all my gear so that was not a issue at all but they did require for me to prove what I had stolen.

Take pictures of all your gear including the trolling motors and graphs so you can prove what you had on or in the boat. Then you should have no or way less issues with your claim if you have a claim.

I went over every item in or on the boat with my agent and then asked what type coverage I need to cover whatever if I were to have an issue.

I told him I do not want an answer like you did not have this for coverage if I have a claim.

Take your time and go over everything with your agent when you get the coverage to make sure you have what you want and need. That would be my best advice.

I have my boat insured with Bob Luellen a World Wide Marine Ins.

Bob saved me 25% from what I was paying having it bundled with my car & house.

+1 here. If you don't at least give Bob a call you are doing yourself a huge disservice.

Bob is a fisherman and knows what the real cost of the stuff is.

Tell him I sent ya.

yeah, talked to my allstate rep (my current insurance) and it looks like tomorrow I get to sit in the garage and inventory my stuff.

going to be a big pain in the butt, but its gotta get done.

I will also call Bob to get a comparison.

    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
    • I’ve only seen that from the air.
