Towing Truck??

Recommended Posts

Hello, just got back from a long weekend up north pulling the new camper. We got a 28 foot travel trailer (4400lbs) and I was pulling with my 04 Expedition and got 8-9 MPG!!! Is this normal? Generally I only get about 15 in the city and this was towing with the air on at 65 mph. Seemed like it really had to work to get an faster than that. What do most guys use for towing and do you really get "THAT" better of gas mileage? We don't drive the truck to work so it's basically a tow vehicle and that's it. So not sure if I would want to pony up for a newer diesel...

Mileage sounds about right for that load with a gas motor. Sucks, but it is what it is wink

Estimate your towing miles for the year and figure out how much money you would save if you got 14 mpg. I bet it ain't enough to buy a new diesel........

Try going 60 and I bet you see a noticeable improvement. It is painful going 60 on 70 mph route though wink but when you do the math, not that different on total time.

my 2000 150 would do about 5-6 towing my enclosed tool trailer... probably closer to 10,000 pounds though... We pulled it with a 07 a few times and not much better... and honestly... I have a 2012 6.7 and it does good empty... but, hook even that 4400lb wind sail behind you and it's probably going to be around 12 realistically... now, it'll pull it as fast as you want to go... and you won't even know its back there... My 06 6.0 diesel I had before would be 10-12 towing... but I never really tow much long distance... just hour or less at a time moving to jobsites...

I have an 06 F150 supercrew and pull 26' 5th wheel. Best I got was 11 mpg on a 200 mile trip towing the boat too, but I never went over 55 and took my time stopping and taking off at stop signs. Worst I got was a little under 7 mpg on a 250 mile trip but that was going down I35 at 70 MPH.

First, you have to pay yourself back what the diesel will cost versus what you already have. Then you can start figuring if better mileage will save money.

My 02 F150 pulling a 28' enclosed, 8 foot tall walls, with 7 full sized 4 wheelers in it, driving aggressive, got about 4-5mpg.

Same truck pulling my 18 foot boat 70mph gets about 9-11mpg, empty about 18mpg at 70.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
