Memorial Day

While I want to wish everyone a safe and wonderful Memorial Day weekend, lets not lose sight of what it is. It's not national fishing day and it's not national BBQ day and it's not thank a vet day (that's Veterans Day), it's the day we pay remembrance to the soldiers that didn't make it home, no matter what war they fought in. If your not really sure what it means to you, drive by Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday and take look.

My grandfather from my mom's side of the family was not only a dentist in the army during WWII, he was also a great fisherman. He would catch eater sized bullheads for dinner with the family. Every year, I always take the time to remember him during these three days. War veterans and soldiers are true heroes in my book. They put their lives on the line to ensure our safety and freedom. To me, it's never about trying to emulate my grandfather's fishing style and way of life, but rather, pay tribute to it. And I'm going to do just that this weekend.

I would encourage anyone who can to attend one of the programs that go on at local cemetaries, if there is one near. My wife and I started going with my parents years back. They're both gone now, but we look forward to it every year. We go to Roselawn, where most of my family is buried, and the crowd gets older every time we go. I just hope that as these people leave us, it doesn't get to the point where they don't have them anymore.
