tires wearing unevenly on car

Recommended Posts

on my wife's pontiac g6, the front tires have worn bald on the inside. is this alignment or something else in the front end like a tire rod? just want to make sure I fix the issue when new tires are put on.

ball joints and tie rods can cause inside tire wear. Typically a ball joint will wear just the inner part of the tire. A tie rod will wear the tire with a taper from the outside to the inside (a condition known as feathering). Also if a tie rod is loose you should be able to see it in the steering wheel as the wheel will be off center.

If this has the control arms I think it does the rear bushings can also go bad. If the ball joint or the bushing is worn the control arm will need to be replaced.

If everything is tight than an alignment may be all that is needed with a slight adjustment to camber (which may be an additional charge since camber is not always technically adjustable) and then resetting toe.
