This Weather is TERRIBLE!

Ghost.. it's good to hear that reinforcement. My head tells me that they have to "do what they do" but I wouldn't have blamed them this morning if they didn't want to come out of the tree at all! I'm feeling revived for tonight's hunt and if nothing else, scouting for tracks shouldn't be too bad.

It's not a lot of fun out there right now.. final total was 15" of snow. I cut a path back to one of my spots last night and put the blind up and that was some hard work. From what I saw in the little bit I scouted around they are staying mainly on the field edges or woods as the snow isn't as deep there. I watched one jake work a field edge last night and it looked like pretty hard work for him.

I did hear a few gobbles this morning, a long ways off, so that was a positive sign. Not sure what I'm going to do tonight. I have a spot on a fence line where I've shot two birds in the past 3 years at night, as they make their way back to roost. The normal advantage of this spot is you can see the birds coming from a good ways off in the field and adjust to where they may cross the fence line as they come. Given how little they are using the fields I'm not sure if that will be useful or not. It's also very difficult in the woods right now because the tree branches are holding so much snow you can't see very far in front of you. Bring on the warm temps and even rain to melt this stuff!

Went out this am for a couple of hours. Heard a bunch of gobbling. Nothing would respond to calls, but so great to hear it. Thought i was duck hunting when a hen flew in and landing in the decoys. Only turkey that we saw, but it got the heart going. Saw a lot of fowl life; ducks, geese, cranes, and misc field birds. So great to be in the woods, or field!

Here's what we dealt with in Wisconsin. 12". No power. No heat. Trees down everywhere. Blinds crushed and broken. frown

We had to leave the campgound. That pretty much put an end to our hunt. We are going down for the day tomorrow. We're hoping for the best.

I got lucky this evening. My buddy could not go out this morning, so I went out this evening on public land by where I have seen turkeys and know they roost. I tried to just scout for where to go for the morning. Got out at 4, and got a gobble at about 440. Saw the bird at about 445. He jumped a pond and I thought game was on. The he got behind me, and the next thing I heard, he gobbled 150 yards on my other side. Called him in form there. He flanked me again, and came up on my off side. Rolled him at 40 yards after he went behind a stump. 21.6 pounds. Double beard. 10 inches and 7.5 inches. 3/4 inch spurs. Very nice bird for me. 2nd bird ever, and first one solo. This bird was a lot more blonde than my last bird. very neet how different they can be. Pictures won't load, so Monday I will get them up.

My picture files are too big... any help on reformatting please?

I upload mine to "Photobucket" first. (it's free and easy) Then you just need to copy and paste the %7Boption%7D code into your reply.

There's better instructions stickied to the top of the photograpy forum here at HSO.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
