dairyman
looking for suggestions---I've been walking out as of late and my set up is just too heavy. Which 1 or 2 man hub set up would be the best option??
Jim Uran
Id check out the tamrack that Clam makes, its 5x5 and weighs 15 lbs. Sets up in a snap. Its designed for one person and ive checkex them out at Gander Mountain. They seem well built, should be able to pick one up for about $130 or so. MaxGoldman
I prefer a 2 man over a 1 man when it's just me just for the sake of being able to stand up fully. Now as for the 2 man hubs, I only own the Frabill outpost thermal, which works great because I almost always am fishing alone in it so there is plenty of room. If I were to fish 2 people more frequently I would check out the eskimo fatfish, I've only seen the other brands at sport shows and I got the frabill because of the deal I got on it but I really like the concept the fatfish has with that extra floor space. Also thermal is great over non.
Carl Bjorgen
Id check out the tamrack that Clam makes, its 5x5 and weighs 15 lbs. Sets up in a snap. Its designed for one person and ive checkex them out at Gander Mountain. They seem well built, should be able to pick one up for about $130 or so. This is a good choice for your needs. It is the lightest hub out there. Pretty much every manufacturer makes a 5x5 that folds down to a 42" length. Some have 300 vs. 600 fabric which will account for the variance in weight.HT's instack is 18 pounds, Shappell's Icehouse 5000 is 19 pounds, etc; I got a Killzone Igloos 5x5 a couple weeks ago for a 100 bucks shipped from their HSOforum. 19 pounds, 600 denier, folds down to 42" and fits into my jet sled jr.They are all sold out for the season so it will cost you more when they are available again. I've had it out 4-5 times already and am very satisfied with the quality and compact size/weight of this hub.129.99 at Gander for that Tamarack right now. I was going to get that until I saw the 100.00 Killzone deal. I also like the dark color of the Killzone over the baby blue of a Clam. Other than that, I would go the Clam route based on the size and weight.

sunniewally
i would think a clam trapper would be better then a hub for walking out. you need something for the hub, fishing gear and auger, so you'll want a sled of some kind. the flip over will give you the room and not much if any more weight and you'll have a lot more mobility to move around. MN BassFisher
I don't know if they still make them (their site doesn't have them listed right now) but I use a Glen's Outdoors hub. I had a Clam Base Camp and I really liked the idea of it (lightweight, roomy, fit in my trunk) but it seemed a bit cheaply made, threads coming undone, windows seemed like they were on the verge of cracking/breaking, and I didn't like the door system - it only had one door for a 6X6 and the zipper was ridiculously tight which I knew would eventually lead to problems. I took the gamble and ordered a Glens Outdoors 6X6 for $140 (they were one of many sponsors to an ice fishing forum I was on and because of that they offered me free shipping). I've put it through the ringer over the last 3 years and it still is holding up beautifully. At the time it had a lot of features that no other Hub offered (2 doors, 4 side pockets, two very large overhead pockets, largeee windows, a place to hang up a lantern/light, reflective tape on the outside) but now a lot of these ideas have been adapted and improved on. If they were still available, I wouldn't hesitate to get another. Not to mention that I've only seen one other one ever on the ice so it stands out a bit! 20lbSloughShark
IMO hubs are GREAT in terms of space and warmth. They fit into nearly any car, and once buried in the snow, they are the warmest portable available. That said, they can be annoying to haul around, and are not that portable on the lake. If I was to buy another portable I would either get a suitcase or a flip over.
