mnhunter2
Which line for ice fishing large fish?
James_R
I like PowerPro. It's kind of expensive but worth the money in my humble opinion.
TruthWalleyes
PLine Flourocarbon and a good drag. If you prefer braid, i'd use power pro, but only if fishing in a warm house, and even then i'd still use flourocarbon leader. You can catch any size fish on just about any poundage of line provided you've got a decent drag system on your reel.
Bulldoggr
I like the crystal Fireline for ice fishing. I am 50/50 on also using a Good Florocarbon leader. If I am using Jigging Raps or other jigs that could cause twisting in the line. I like to use the Floro with a barrel swivel onto the fireline. dan z
Any braid is great for jigging. Match the line weight for your weight of jig. Its amazing how strong that 3lb stuff can be. A floro leader will help with line shy fish but hardly needed if you use the crystal color.
CrewJones
i have great luck with the dark green color braid have it on all my rods put a barrel swivel in the line to avoid twist.
Stick in Mud
I don't have much of a preference for braids during the winter. Suffix 832, Fireline, Power Pro, they all work just fine for me (I just use whatever I have left after spooling up my summer rods). I also use a leader and a small swivel. bassinboy3
I am a huge fan of fire line, the only problem is it gathers ice when your hole hopping on a cold day, but it comes off easy just like ice on your line guides
slipperybob
Just about any braid would do pretty well. However the different line test# will often vary in spooling results as well as slight differences bewteen mfg. For example Sufix braid has quite a bit of line body to it. Good for avoiding line dig in on the spool but looks kind of stacked if the line lays begins to favor one side of the spool.
Ryan N
I have really become a fan of PowerPro

CrappieAttitude
We are planning a Winnipeg trip in early March and will more than likely not be fishing in any houses. I have used powepro in the summer and like it a lot, but as far as ice fishing, I haven't given it the test. Will I be getting frustrated with freezing line, or will it be doable. I plan on having a floro leader and swivel, but dont know if the powerpro will be too boyant for me. This will be a first for me up there, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.CA
TruthWalleyes
Outside in the cold, you will not like it. On a real cold day, say your fishing in 30' and reel in your line, walk 20' to the next hole...You'll be pulling your line off the reel...To make things worse, it will effect how your line comes off your reel when a big fish is pulling drag. Like many people, we like braided line (I love it!!! however, not in the winter)...it just doesn't work worth a darn outside in freezing temps. 30 degree day however...No problem.Big fish you want a good drag, braid will indeed compromise that...and with a big winni walleye on the end...I'd stick with mono or flouro. slipperybob
Despite all the bad points to braid. If you're hole hopping and it's 10F or colder, everything is gonna freeze regardless. You get ice skimming the hole, ice on your line, rod line guides, reel spool where ever there's metal and moisture, etc.,...The braid/superline is gonna be more reliable when you need it to cut through all that ice freezing up on everything when you've got a big fish on.
