new truck tires?

Recommended Posts

does anybody have recent experience with general grabber hts tires? I'm looking for new tires for an 05 f150 supercrew. most of my driving is on road but use it for pulling the boat, car trailer and ice fishing, are these tires agressive enough in snow on the lake? the truck currently has uniroyal liberator a/t on it.

thanks,mike

I had a set on my 06 F150. I thought they were junk. Tread wear was horrible, didn't even get 20K out of them. Needed 4wd if more than a dusting of snow. I currently have a set of BF Goodrich AT's and love them. Rarely need 4wd and have about 12k miles and showing only a little wear. They are a little spendy but with truck tires you get what you pay for.

When i bought my truck in 04 I took the mini-donuts off and put on GB at's because I could get the size I wanted for the price I wanted. They only lasted me about 35,000 though and had to replace them. BFG's from 40-95,000 and still going- no flats, no complaints. Yeah you do get what you pay for.

My next tires I AM going to try treadwrights re-treads though. I only drive the truck when I'm pulling the boat so it's not like I put a million highway miles on.

I have a '10 F150 SuperCrew and just put on a set of Michilin LTX tires. I can say that I hate them. The darn things are so quiet and smooth I find myself driving along at 80+ on the highway if I'm not paying attention to to the speedo!

I have not had the greatest long term relationship with General tires. I know they are expensive, but the Michilins are worth the money.

I put a set of Kumho SAT KL61's on my 01 F150 and the difference was nearly unbelievable from the previous all season tires. What was immediately noticeable was they meet industry severe snow service standards, which proved to be accurate plus they were quiet and rode very well. Granted the previous tires that came with the truck may never have been a good tire, but I'd never experienced such a difference.

I know that it's late, but I had a set put on my '03 Screw last year. So far no problems and they've done just fine in the snow. I'm a gentle driver so I'll get good wear out of them regardless (I hope). I got 80,000 out of the set on my last Ranger and the guys at the shop recommended that I leave them on longer

I got michelins on my truck and they seem reasonably quiet, but not the grippiest on snow. I had to get a second run at it the other day when I was coming up a steep hill on the horseshoe chain (pullling my snowmobile trailer). No issues with them on road snow, but offroad I'd say they probably aren't the best.

As a Ford steering and suspension guy, I would not recommend General or Hankook tires. Hankooks have great traction but don't last. Generals and Continentals tend to need to be balanced every 5-10k miles. I have bf long trail ruggeds on my 01. I like them but would have put Michelins on if the size I needed was available when I needed tires.
