Good Beginner Duck Call

Recommended Posts

If you get a chance head to the Gamefair in Anoka either this weekend or next and you could try many plus get some help from some of the makers or their reps!! I started with a Marshland duck and a Ken Martin Goose, neither are made anymore but I now use Foiles for both. They can adjust it for you on the spot and give you some great advice on calling. Any questions let me know!!

There are a lot out there to choose from... more and more great calls every year. Bem said it right to try as many as you can before deciding. If you can't make the Game Fair, many stores will allow you to try out calls... if you aren't bashful about blowing one in a store full of people smile.gif Gander Mtn usually has a "tester" model of most of their calls for people to try. The Foiles calls that Bem mentioned are excellent... but are spendy. I'd consider them a more advanced call-- maybe one to work your way up to if you're a beginner.

If you are truly new at calling, I'd recommend sticking with a double reed call, as they are easier to use and master. Single reeds are trickier, but sound great! Some calls I'd recommend are the Big River Duck Buster or Pro Magnum. The Duck Buster is great for in-close calling AND long-range calling. Another great brand of calls to check out would be the Primos line. The Wench series is marsh-proven, and they are releasing several different models this season that I am very anxious to try out! The P.H.A.T. lady (for Open Water) and the Yo' Sista' (Close in calling) are two that I can't wait to try. They also have a brand new line of Wench calls coming out this fall.

Good luck, and have fun looking! If you're like me, you can never have enough calls, and you'll amass quite a pile over the years!!!

I would suggest an Illusion Mini-Mag duck call. Easy to blow into and the double reed makes it easy to work. It's not a real loud call and for that reason I reccomend this call for beginners!
It's the one I use most when the ducks are in good range to hear me talk to them. Great for doing chuckles and grunts! Good Luck! wink.gif

I think it really depends on the water you are hunting. If it is small potholes/sloughs I would start with a single reed acrylic, doesn't have to bee top of the line by any means. If you are hunting on a lake, bigger water with a lot of wind, I prefer a double reed plastic call. These are loud and raspy. Just my experience...As for learning how to call, listen and hunt with a good caller or listen to the ducks. Too many people in my opinion have a preset notion what they "should" sound like. If the ducks are vocal, match their sounds and you'll like the results.

The Primos Wench is an easy blowing call. Also look at the Haydel's Dk-85, blows easy and blows wet. Great call for under 20.

If you want a good call for under 30 bucks check out the Roten's Vortex. These are plastic double reed, louder than your kids stereo kind of call, but after it breaks in, it's not to bad. I will be looking for a Shane Roten acryllic at game fair.
