what would cause the opener not to work when you close it and it trips the little switch to stop it. the only way you can get it to go back up is the release it from the track unplug the opener and plug it back in, it will work. if you run it up and down without hitting the switch to stop it, it will work fine. once you hit the stop its like it trigger something inside the opener and you have to go thru the routine again. it does not trip a circuit breaker though.

Mine acted somewhat simailar a couple of years ago and I found a lead wire to one of the "saftey stops" was broken. By saftey stops I mean the units mounted on each of the garage door rails near the floor that projects the light beam and prevents a door closing on an a child if it's obstructed. If the electrical connection is broken the opener believes there is something in the way. However I did not have to unplug the unit to re-set it. There has to be a 800-help # for Genie.

Echo is on the right track - wires loose/broken or simply the safety beam blocked our out of alignment.

I have a liftmaster, not a geinie, but had similar symptoms for years. Intermittent problems where it would just stop, light flash, or need to wait for it to reset. I ordered a new controll board for it on Wednesday and replaced it on Saturday. Good as new. Cost me $75, but I am a happy camper as that has annoyed me for years.

There is an adjustment for downward force. When it gets cold out the garage door has more resistance and could be tripping. Give it a quarter or half turn on the downward pressure adjustment and see if that fixes it

I had that same problem several years ago on one of my rental units. Turned out my tenant "helped" me by greasing the trolley and rail in the summer. When it got cold, the grease got stiff and caused the problem. After almost half a can of WD40 as a solvent, I got all the grease off and lubed it with spray silicone. Worked perfectly. I had a discussion with the tenant about the proper way to lube an opener and the clause in the lease about not doing unauthorized repairs.
