Countdown to Wiscosin Firearms Season.....More anxious than a hormonal teenager on Prom Night

Recommended Posts

I have seen some dandy bucks on my property in WI while bow hunting and have not been able to get in range.

That all changes next Saturday.

Part of my property is shotgun, the other allows rifles.

I have not hunted my property for a week and it will not be hunted again until Saturday.

I am fired up to say the least.

I spent 4 days out in the woods in MN and only saw 1 deer when it was too dark to shoot. I am very excited for WI season.

Also hunting in Webster (some private woods east of town)! Small world. Shorter drive than hunting in MN, too.

Did you buy a doe tag? These past few years they have been $2 and UNLIMITED. I'm glad they changed it to 1 per person and $12/tag. I'd love to take 2 deer but realistically I'll probably take one.

Will be out there Sat AM thru Mon AM.

Webster Siren area

10-4, Good luck MJ! The population up there is usually pretty good. Some nice bucks too wink You'll have to see if Donbo is in the area when you are smile

I'm gonna be in Balsam Lake for opener, then east of you over in Minong for the second weekend.

Get a big one and have a bunch of fun!

Looks like the Webster forecast is upper 40s and 10 mph winds. Crazy.

Some of the property we hunt on was logged out pretty recently, anybody know if it would it be worth setting up a little blind and hunting the open area? Or am I better off staying in my stand?

I will be headed to the Ladysmith area with my kids to hunt this weekend. Looking foreward to it but maybe not quite as much a Rumriverrat grin WIMN, I think those recent clearcut areas have potential to pull in deer and it definately doesn't hurt to put a blind on the edge of one.

If I were you I would hunt in, or on the edge of the thickest, nastiest cover available. Think "escape routes" and cover. That's where they're gonna go. You might see some deer in the open stuff, but the veteran deer have been through the hoops and know how to survive.

Hope this helps!

Deerhunter,

Did they log it over the summer or just before deer season? I spent a lot of time on google looking into it, some people say it's great if logged out during summer because there's all sorts of new growth, others say it's no good for 2-3 years before there is some cover. A lot of sites say that guys who hunt public land fight over who gets to put a stand up next to recently logged areas, too, though... I'm thinking I might make a little blind and set up camp there. I have 1 weekend (spent 2 hunting already in MN) left to try and bag a deer or two, would be great if all the gas/permit/supply money I spent means I get some meat.

I would imagine they should still be chasing a little bit, but I cant say I've seen much of it in past years. Seems like opening morning/weekend there is so much chaos that they are all over the place. It's been a while since I didn't fill my needs on opening weekend (knock on wood). When I do go out through the rest of the week I see a lot of random activity and not much close following.
