merkman
Spears are like decoys, one is all you need... but there is no reason not to get more. I have 3 spears and 30+ working decoys...

terrible_fisherman
I have two spears. If you stick a big one or even a smaller one for that matter in a poor spot sometimes putting a second spear in them is not a bad idea so that you do not loose the fish to a kick off. bowhunt
I only had one spear the last two years and never had one get off. At last years Get to Gator I speared a 33" my biggest fish so far. Hit it right behind the head but the barbs were barely hooked under the skin. I was really wishing I had a back up to put another spear in it. I got the fish but if it would of started thrashing it would of been gone. I am in the process of taking an old cheap rusty spear and fixing it up into my back up. My advise is that you don't need a back up, but if you can get one for cheap it can't hurt.Bowhunt

Spike76
I've used three spears once. I've used two spears many times. If you spear them in the head one is enough. Through the years, sometimes the water clarity is such that the placement of the spear, or the quick movement of the fish, makes you hit them farther back and then they can flop off. The largest northern I ever speared, flopped off before I could get the second spear in her. I speared my first northern at about 15 years old and I'm going to be 67. I've seen many different scenarios in the spear house and have enjoyed every one of those learning experiences.
