finnedfakes
Anybody use and had any success with a larger artificial decoy for pike? Im talking about 16-24" range. Or even bigger, I suppose.
BOUNCED
I've heard of guys running them out to the side of the hole as a "confidence" decoy. They'll just leave a really large decoy sit there while they work a regular decoy. I've never tried it but I'm going to give it a try this year. efgh
If you paint it bright white with a bright red head you will have pike come to look at it. I have speared some nice pike using a extra large red and white decoy. I saw a 14 lb. pike with a 2 lb. sucker in his mouth a guy speared, he was using a big redheaded decoy. he said he never moved the decoy while he used it. merkman
Is this big enough? 31.5 inch decoy...
Gordie
Big decoys do work but bigger is not always better for spearing in regards to fake decoys. I have seen some really big pike with the smallest of decoys. Certain times of the year will dictate what size is best. Early season I feel bigger is better the later in the year I tend to go smaller. I read some place on a report that later in the year the pike primarily feed on fathead minnows. So I base my presentation on that and it has worked for me.Have fun experimenting.
finnedfakes
Thats pretty much the way I was going to do it since I usually run 2 decoys anyway. I've heard of guys running them out to the side of the hole as a "confidence" decoy. They'll just leave a really large decoy sit there while they work a regular decoy. I've never tried it but I'm going to give it a try this year.
finnedfakes
That makes sense to me as I have noticed that the fish in their stomaches get smaller towards the end of winter in the lakes I spear in. alot of my smaller decoys seem to work better towards late season. I read some place on a report that later in the year the pike primarily feed on fathead minnows. So I base my presentation on that and it has worked for me.Have fun experimenting. finnedfakes
Last November, I went to a spearing supply store in Michigan to purchase new ice tongs. They had just started selling life size pike decoys ( roughly 24") by a local carver. The store owners theory was that Pike are territorial and would come over to show who the boss is. Every winter I'll spear a couple of smaller pike with new or old wounds on them. Thinking I will be experimenting with a couple this winter. pikestabber
It's quite often you can watch a smaller fish in the hole (something under 4lbs or so) and if he hangs around long enough, the boss man makes an appearance, too. Could be a territorial thing, but I think pike like to swoop in on each other and see what they are hanging around for (what kind of forage did you find me?).
