Hard to see without seeing the dog, but a life jacket should keep him from going down a hole. I assume you have thought about it, but I think the bigger thing you have to think about is keeping all your gear where he can't get at it. Especially hooks, jigs, etc., stuff that he could swallow or chew on that would cause a serious problem for him. Having said that, I have brought one of my dogs out to my house a couple times and she wasn't quite as impressed with fishing as I was. Now I bring a bed for her to sleep on!

I agree, not much to worry about unless the dog is made of lead or has absolutely no bouyancy.

If the dog falls into the hole I highly doubt it will get submerged enough in the initial dunking that it gets below the ice level. Considering he's talking a wheel house the ice must be fairly thick by that point.

I'd also think the dog would be observent enough to see the water and avoid stepping in it.

If it is something you are really worried about then just tie it up to a bunk or make it wear a life vest.

My friend's jack russell went in and he just floated head down, tail up. My friend grabbed his tail and pulled him out. That was out on the ice and not in the wheel house. I've had a friend's small dog in the house. Put his blankets on the top bunk and he just stayed up there and slept.
